Re: Yet another gun arrest up north...
I have never thought of it like that before. Thank you for the insight. I feel really fortunate to be from the southeastern portion of the US.

I have been in Mississippi since 1976 and every day I thank the Lord for being here. This is the USA.

Several years ago an article appeared in American Rifleman in which the author made that case that we cannot compare gun law / gun violence in Canada with gun law and violence in the USA. His point was that the settlers of both countries were very different, the majority of settlers in Canada came from urban populations with relatively low gun ownership and settled in urban areas of Canada, whereas the expansion and settlement of the USA was done in rural areas by farmers and ranchers who almost universally owned and used firearms as a necessity of life.
Excellent insight Doug, I believe you are correct, it is a result of the culture of the people who settled the northeast.Tree of Liberty wrote:I will probably get ripped for saying this but... New York's laws and regulations seem so Un-American to me. How do people consider NYC to be uber-patriotic or American? Or more so than the rest of the USA.
It always amazed me, the Northeast is where the Revolutionary War was started because the Government was coming to take the Citizen's firearms. I have figured it out. The Civil War killed a large percentage of young men in the North and South. The North was needing men to work the factories, as miners and construction workers for buildings and infrastructure. We opened the Country to Immigrants. Most of them came to the Northeast. They were used to the Government being non-benevolent. In 1913, when they passed the Sullivan Law on the carry of handguns, it seemed the normal thing to do. You must also understand, there were two President's assasinated in New York State and Mayor Gaynor of NYC was shot by a disgruntled city employee in 1912.
Since the immigrants (a large portion of the citizenry) never did own firearms in their own Country, they did not object to laws they thought would protect them.
The South on the other hand did not have the influx of foreigners and is still more like the pre-Civil War America, than the Northeast.
