Looking at a Winchester model 100 how do you find out how old it is. And are they reliable shooters??

Have had one in the family for at least 25 years. If kept clean and serviced regularly they are excellent rifles. You may want to ask if it has been inspected for flaws during the recall period. The recall involved the firing pin that would break causing the rifle to go full auto. The original rifles were chambered for 243, 308 and 284 win.

Grasshopper, didn't they chamber them in .358 Winchester?

I've had three of them in .308. I've still got a carbine in .308. I've never had a problem with any of them. This link has a lot of info on 88's and 100's. Scroll all the way to the end to see info about the firing pin problem.

I had a 100 in .243 when I was younger that I wish I still had. Was a great rifle.

My dad has a 100 .308 carbine that is insanly accurate for what it is. I have shot MOA with it at 100yds a lot, and out to 200yds on several occasions.

A few years back I collected Model 100's and had a .243, .284, and .308 all carbines. Sold all three to a collector in North Miss. Man Do I wish I had held on to them a little longer. All were in Perfect say 90% condition. Started collecting military M1 Garands and M1 Carbines, also got out of that. Once again, I wish I had held on to all of the military stuff a little longer. Bought a DCM Garand from a friend a few weeks ago in EXCELLENT condition. Going to keep that one. Wanted a Springfield, but this H&R was to clean to pass up.

They were never in .358. They are reliable if kept clean. The .284 kicks like a mule. It should be inspected or questioned if repaired after the recall. Values differ between carbine and rifle with the carbines bringing about $50 more in each grade. Pre 64's add 15% premium. These prices I give you are for rifle in .308. For the .243 add 15% and the .284 add 20%. Excellent 600, VG 475, Good 350, Fair 250 and poor 200. The stocks were in checkering or basketweave.

I always favored the .308. More people understood that caliber and never quite understood what a .284 equated to in size. The .243 was always a questionable caliber as back then most preferred anything .30 or better. A question was posed on this site about 30.06 vs. all other calibers. Unquestionably the 30.06 was and always will be considered the MOST POPULAR caliber that ever was. With today's new bullet designs, brass, powder, and choices in calibers, the old trusty 30.06 has to take a back seat. I shoot a 7mm Mag and have nothing but praise for this round, but others I hunt with put Their trust in whatever They can hit the bullseye with.
I grew up around 30.06 742's and Marlin 30.30's and I have seen more Deer taken with those 2 guns than anything else. At one time the Remington 742 and Browning BAR were the cream of the crop. I still have My Dad's 742 I purchased for Him in 1968 at Otasco's in Greenwood , Ms. STILL a GOOD GUN!!

New here. I have mod 100 in .308 that I would like to clean up and hunt with some. It has a sticky bolt. I am sure it just needs a good ter down and cleaning. I am assuming Winchester will still fix recall on it.
