I know all I need to know about the Mayan calendar by the fact that we're still around....the Mayans aren't.....I'm more worried about the masses going retarded for a couple weeks or so than I am the world actually ending on that date

I love the folks stockpiling stuff in fear of the end of the world. Do they not understand that if the predictions are true, which I sincerely doubt, the world will end, i.e. all life will become extinct, that includes the goof balls stockpiling food and such.

Re: Apocalypse not now
I've been studying this stuff for 20 years. Nearly every civilization has a story of their beginning and their end. These civilizations were separated by hundreds or thousands of years and thousands of miles yet they have remarkable similarities even though they couldn't possibly have known each other(I'll spare you the details because this will turn into a religion debate).
Anyway, every great civilization met its end somehow. If you're whole world was 500 square miles, then it wouldn't take much to destroy "the world". The potential of a planet-killing comet or crust displacement is out there and always will be. Not much we can do about that.
The Mayan calendar is based on cosmic procession and other solar/astronomical timetables. The relationship between the Mayan calendar and the Gregorian calendar is not a direct conversion so there isn't any agrement about the actual date anyway. The only agreement is that the end of the Mayan calendar represents the end of one cycle and the beginning of another....just like the end of our own yearly calendar represents the end of one year and the beginning of another.
Whew, all that being said, I still like to mess with people about the whole 2012 thing just for fun.

This is what I've always tried to tell people.....but folks are going to believe what they want in the end. If I'm not mistaken, dec 21 2012 if converted properly between the Mayan calendar and the Gregorian calendar would have actually been several years ago
I've never understood people freaking out over the potential end of the world. In my mind, if you've been living right then you should have nothing to worry about. Panic about the potential end of the world tells me that either you aren't as good a person as you claim to have been, or you're just really insecure. If I have advance notice my plan is to pull out a lawn chair, sit back and watch the show(that's assuming a total end of the world)

Re: Apocalypse not now
I looked into the "space threat" for about a month after listening to some you tube doomsaying. I decided to go with science instead.
Seems that the facts are that like the article said, nasa and its dedicated object watching spacecraft have spotted, tracked, and know about all large objects that could come close to earth for many decades into the future. So, thanks to science, humankind will know of any large space object threat long before it gets even remotely close and we'll have years to go out and nudge it out of our way. If the dinosaurs just had telescopes, a bigger brain, and rockets we might all have scales today.
btw, the closest upcoming rock is 900' wide called 9942 Apophis either passing or hitting in 2036.
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/risk/ currently observed near objects
..but hey, I still store food for the little stuff, like katrinas, economic collapses, and zombie holocausts.
