Magnolia plate rack max capacity
I've been wanting to exercise my 10mm and although not explicitly prohibited from the plate rack because the sign says no magnum ammo, and since full house 10mm is right there with .357 magnum, I just want to know if I can shoot some Alabama ammo FMJ flat points that feel well below the hot stuff. Can someone give me FPS limit?

Re: Magnolia plate rack max capacity
I don't know of any specifics for the plate rack and my Magnolia membership has lapsed, but when Glenn Whitfield initially put together the steel challenge-type program at Magnolia, they set the following maximums for ammunition at the steel matches to protect and extend the life of their targets:
Velocity maximum of 1225 fps or a maximum of 180 power factor.
power factor = (bullet weight in grains X velocity in fps) / 1000
Hopefully someone will come along with a better response, but I figured I'd post these for a general ballpark.

There is a laminated sheet in front of the 25 yard shed that tells all the rules to the plate rack. I will take a look at it next time I am out there. Cliff will be along and answer your question though..

PhillipM, I ask you to do this....... as a test.
Before shooting, paint the plates with FLAT WHITE paint. Shoot ONE round (assuming you hit the plate
) and go check the impact. If the 10mm dimple is larger (and deeper) than most others on the plate, sorry, too much power for the plates.

Pretty sure it doesn't say anything about 10mm on the sheet. I know it days no magnums, 5.7, .357sig or center fire rifle, maybe something about shotguns too?
Sounds like SGF has the ideal solution if it's not listed

I believe he could have punched through much quicker if he could hit somewhere close to the same spot with each successive round.

Well............... Let me count the "issues" I see in that video.
1. Based on counting his footsteps, I think he was shooting at about 7yds. Way too close for shooting steel.
2. That plate appeared to be 3/16" (maybe 1/4") thick.
3. The strange part. In all the hits, I didn't hear gunfire once. Just BONG of the plate (which did sound good).
And yes, his accuracy was poor for that distance.....

I viewed the video on YouTube, and I agree completely with your observations.
He says the plate was 3/16" in the video description, which is too thin in my opinion and thinner than the plates at Magnolia. My .22 steel is 1/4"...
As for the distance and lack of sound from the gunshots, someone asked if he was shooting suppressed or why there was no noise of the gun shots, and this was his answer:
"Thats just because of the location of the mic on the digital camera I'm using for the video. I'm at least 20 feet behind the camera and the sound of the glock has no walls or solid objects to bounce the sound waves back at the front of the cameras mic."

I think I can find something else to spend my $$$$ on instead of 10mm ammo to destroy a metal plate held up by a pop up tent. 10mm ammo is expensive as all get out.

looked fun to me. I shot the snot out of a refriderator and some full spray paint cans and an old tv not to long ago.
Back to topic. velocity kills usse the 180 grs and should have no problems. notice the 155s punched a hole quick

Re: Magnolia plate rack max capacity
speed is energy.. energy is heat.. heat melts steel...
at 1225fps or 180pf my 357magnum would be allowed and i know it says no magnums..
heck my 44mag slinging a 200swc stays below that speed and PF??
Granted max loads from either will easly blow past those numbers.

Re: Magnolia plate rack max capacity
I haven't taken the time to shoot it yet. I need to take a few days off and live at Magnolia testing loads and practicing.

I was thinking most .357 stuff is faster than 1225. No? What kind of ballistics does it have?
To keep a 200 grain .44 mag below 180 PF, it would have to be going 900 fps or slower. That's very tame for a .44 mag and would be a serious download.
