M44 throwing fireballs

Post by Rw on Mon Jan 02, 2012 7:04 pm

Met up with nonnie and a couple of his friends this afternoon at the range. I think we put 50 rounds through the m44, it was a blast as usual. I took this short clip of nonnie shooting it right before we headed out , really captured the fireball well i think. Ammo was bulgarian surplus. It really only threw one on the first shot, weird.

The recoil looked very light on the last couple of shots. Were they all surplus?

Cool!
My M44 is apart right now. When the temp gets up, its getting some Duracoat then I'll have a fireball showdown between it and my AR pistol.

Luckily the bluing on this one is very good, i do need to freshen up the stock though like i did my cut down 91/30. The cut down one however has horrible bluing, looks more like black oxide. Its getting brownells teflon moly or something simillar soon.

Ive noticed my cut down one is not consistent either with the fireballs. Different lots of ammo too, so thats not it. This gun normally throws huge fireballs every shot. I did notice it liked the russian ammo i had before better than the bulgarian. I have some czech too i need to try.

Any short barreled rifle is going to throw a fireball. Just lets you know you're wasting gun powder.

what length do you have that cut down to? is there a significant difference in recoil? looks neat.

Makes me want to go get another Mosin and attempt it...but then I always get one in tact and matching and enjoy the historical significance/state of purity. That's why I am always looking for Mosin Nagant barrel/receivers without the stocks so I can have some fun without feeling sort of guilty about it.

Your work definitely inspires me to further my Mosin collection.

Thanks for the compliments, that ones been a fun yet cheap project. Since i got a deal on the scope im barely over the $200 mark cash wise. I do have several hours of time into it though.
On the historical significance, you should see the m44 i picked up sunday... its got a bunch of markings ive not seen before nor can i find them online.

The last Mosin I picked up was a carbine version with marking on it that I cannot find any information on. Plus it looks like some symbols and numbers were ground off. I only paid $30 for it.
