The get John Heiter out of the office and shooting
This thread is for suggestions/volunteers to help in lessening the amount of work our illustrious USPSA leader John Heiter preforms for each match. The work load is such that I have never seen John squadded, he just pops out of the office, shoots a stage then races back to the office. This is totally unfair, we are out having all the fun and John is a huge reason we can have it.

Ok, since we have a computer volunteer, i'll volunteer to ride the 4-wheeler around to pick up score sheets !! Or to spell check JD's messages, but that may be more work. Seriously, I'm in for helping John out ( that actually does make sense even though it sounds weird ).

Re: The get John Heiter out of the office and shooting
Would it help if we had one person responsible for each stage?? That would only take 5 volunteers.
I know we typically use one computer, can two computers (or three) be used and then the information be merged?
Would having data be entered at each stage (in a computer, Ipad, Iphone, or another Idon'tknowwhatelse?) help to speed things up?
I am just helping the brainstorming session.

Stage setup is generally out of John's hands, but improving setup times is always a good thing.

Not a clue, leave that one for John to answer.

Right know USPSA has only two approved electronic handheld score keeping and they both require a Palm device to enter data. I know Palms have been a discontinued device for ages, so numbers are limited, I think the price per unit is cheap, so who knows.
All good suggestions to bring up at Team Magnolia's annual meeting, which is to be announced, but probably sometime this month.

Sorry, JD, Should have been a bit more specific.
I was referring to having one person responsible for totalling the scores. I was thinking more on the paperwork side of things, than stage setup.
I don't think there will be anything that replaces everyone helping out on stage setup.

I think it is so John doesn't have 350 sheets come in at once.. The way he does it helps keep an even pace for entering info.. Thats just my guess though.

Re: The get John Heiter out of the office and shooting
John - has the club looked into buying palms? Surely you can get them cheap on ebay - this would make running a local match much easier as well as MS Classic
Re: The get John Heiter out of the office and shooting
ETA - looks like the cost of the Palm Scoring is $275 for the software and $40 for each palm. I would step up and say I will donate $40 to the club if they purchase palms - anything to help things move along faster and get John out the clubhouse...
Re: The get John Heiter out of the office and shooting
We've looked at the Palm scoring before, but I've never been sold on it enough to make the jump. Part of that is the whole Palm side of things. I hate spending money on something that has been dead for many years. We would need probably 14 of the things to run our state match and I personally would not want to get the cheapest palms possible just because they're so slow updating the database for a big match as it is.
One of the biggest match hassles is getting everyone registered and that data copied into WinScore before the match. I'm REALLY hoping that the changes Rob Boudrie has made to WinScore in the last few weeks and the changes I'm going to make to the online form will take hours of work and condense it into minutes very soon so I'm excited about that.
Honestly, punching in the scores during the match isn't too big a deal and can be done pretty easily provided everyone remembers to total the columns on their score sheets. The areas I'd like to focus on where I feel we're a little weak right now is getting more people involved. Ex. I'd like to but I can't be riding around checking stages to make sure they're being set up properly right now because I have to be inside getting people signed up and collecting money. Then at the end of the match I can't keep an eye on tear down like I'd like to because I'm finishing the scoring. If we can get a few folks involved in that side of it I'll be happy.
Lastly, I know they haven't asked for help but I think it would be good if we could get Richard and Shane some help with lunches. Not saying kick them out by any means, but I think it would be nice if two or three guys could get together and offer to give them a break one match.

John do you just use an excell sheet? Why can't we just use black berry or iPhone to enter data ?
Re: The get John Heiter out of the office and shooting
Long story short - you have to use USPSA's approved method for scoring - EZ Score Win or some thing like that - it is extremely dated software that could use some upgrading.
