Romanian AK's

Post by EagleinChains on Tue Jan 03, 2012 1:55 pm

Ok, So I've never owned an AK-47 and thinking about getting a Romanian WASR-10 with two 30 round mags for just over $400. From what little bit I know, it's my understanding that the Romanian and Chinese are two of the better variants to get(of cheaper AK's, not talking about high end models here), is this true? It seems like that's a good price, is it? Any other advice for an AK newb? Thanks

Dont know who told you a romanian was one of the better guns... dont trust them. A wasr is a piece of junk imho. I bought one not knowing any better, couldnt get rid of it fast enough. The best readily available is a saiga, it would have to be converted to the regular ak style though. Thats easy enough to do though.

Yeah my Romanian shot about a 36" group at 100 yds...after that I cleaned it & sold it immediately! If you actually want to be able to hit something spend just a little more on a decent AK.

Polytech makes a good ak
Some Rom G kits can do pretty good depending on how well they are built

It's the luck of the draw... I can hit the 200 and 250 yard gong at Sherman Hills with mine however.

+1 on the saiga. They're NEW not made from used parts and they are built in Russia by them people who started it all. They come in "sporter" form meaning it has a hunting style stock on it with out a pistol grip, the barrel has a shroud on it to make it difficult but not impossible to put a flash hider/comp on, the mag latch has to have some material removed so it will accept standard surplus mags, and a bullet guide installation is required the rest is purely cosmetic. It sounds complicated but I assure you its a fun little weekend project and you come out with a quality ak for $299 plus parts and accesories.

BINGO.... I think the WASRs are slapped together as fast as possible. Thus giving the Romy a bad rep. Yes, I would pass on a WASR.

My WASR functions fine (so far..) and shoots fair. I think they are hit or miss and I just got lucky. Heck, I couldn't say no for $100.00!!

I guess I got lucky. I've only fired a few hundred rounds through my WASR but it has never malfunctioned and I can hit my plates with it. Never have shot any groups with it.

Thanks for the posts guys. I've had the itch to buy a new toy, but I guess I'll wait a little longer or spend a little more and get a better AK. Much appreciated.

Look for the following when considering a a WASR:
Tapco G2 trigger group. A absolute must.
A straight front sight/gas block.
Not too much slop in the mag well.

These things will greatly increase the odds you get a decent deal.

Fugitive's advice is spot on! Those are a must. Don't advise ordering one. Need hands on and a thorough personal inspection before buying. If it has those things, bolt functions properly, and is in good shape, should be fine (as long as price is reasonable). Mag wiggle may can be addressed with polymer mags. Tapco runs great in mine. If too tight at first, can sand/file the top down for perfect fit. Its no target gun anyway. Just fun to shoot and not worry to much about messing it up. IMHO think everyone should have one no matter what there opinoins of them are.
