Thinking of doing a paint job on my Ar.

Post by Mr.Buttersworth on Tue Jan 03, 2012 7:49 pm

Hello, I'm on the fence about painting my Ar. I'm probably going to do a rust-oleum camo finish just because it would be relatively to take off later if I change my mind. Which colors should I use for our temperate climate? I think I'm going to have an FDE base and go from there. Here's a pic:

I always liked the FDE color and OD green. Google it and see if you like some of the combinations.

www.ar15.com is a good resource for pictures (if you haven't been there already).

Any combination of various browns and OD would be fine for this climate.

I'm just not a fan of tan guns in a state that has very few sandy areas but to each his own. No judgements from me.

Here's a rattle can job I did on my 6.5 nothing special just some pine straw and a couple cans of krylon.

Yeah I do like FDE however I am aware that Mississippi is lacking in the desert terrain. I was thinking of having FDE as a good base light coat to then put varying colors over. I wasn't sure which colors are the best for the largest area of usability. For instance a camouflage with grey in it would work well for Oak/Old woods but not so good in Pine/New woods. I like the tiger-stripe style however, that is for more of a jungle type atmosphere. It's Hard to tell right now which is more prevalent in the woods surrounding me, first because of winter, and second because of a large logging project that has depleted the nearest set of woods.
Stryker6, I really like your camo job looks like it would do well in high grasses. What kind of prep work did you do?

I striped it down and degreased with brake cleaner, then applied a base coat of khaki threw some pine straw on it and applied OD green then went back over it with a light coat of coyote and misted it with black to give it a shadowing effect. looks better in person.

Are you planning to use this weapon to hunt with and that is the reason for the camo or just like the camo look? If it's for the former, I'd suggest going to your hunting location, take some pictures of the area and then as best as possible match the colors and design with your paint job.

Some nice looking for posted thus far.

Stryker6, That paint job looks great. It's hard to believe it could look any better in person than what it does here. You did a great job thumbs up

I used aervoe paints on my m1a and others. The colors are exact matches of the colors the military uses on equipment. I think you have to pay a hazmat fee though if you order online though - which defeats the purpose. I got mine cash and carry years ago somewhere.

This was just the highly reliable point and shoot technique.

I did the pinestraw method on a couple of mags for my AR22 to see how it would hold up. Not bad. I dropped one by the pond and almost didn't find it. scratch

Edit....that's Maroon Duracoat with Flattener on that grip that is in the picture.

I was afraid too. But the nice part of Krylon or Rustoleum is that it cleans off pretty easily if you mess up. I don't know if you guys have ever seen a Marine sniper rifle up close, but it looks like crap.....and it works.

A new years resolution of mine is to try to Duracoat one of mine in the copperhead pattern.

I painted this gun a couple of years ago. I haven't regretted painting it to this day.
