Ordered all my 9mm supplies.... Now Im overwhelmed.
Hey guys,
So, I bought a press, ordered a couple of different bullets, some powders, and primers, now I'm trying to figure out how to put them all together! Ha
I ordered/have:
500 Velocity Bullet 125grn. LRN
500 Moly Precision bullet 125grn FP
Unique powder
Universal powder
CCI primers
And might order some Solo 1000
SO, Ive read and researched a lot of data on the powders, but I'd like to hear from some of you that are local and have some real life experience with these components.
Also, if published data gives me an OAL for LRN or LCN and not FP, or vise versa, how do I know what OAL length to load the different bullets?

I'd offer some help, but being somewhat new to reloading and using all different components, I'd probably just add to the confusion.
But there is one thing I can suggest that I know will help and that is Brian Enos's Forums. If you aren't already a member, become one, great source of info for all things, reloading being one of them.

Thanks Jd,
I already spend to much time on the Enos forum HA, Thats where Ive learned most of my small amount of reloading knowledge.
Just wanted to hear from some of you guys.

I would recommend that you find an experienced reloader close to you and beg for some one-on-one time. An hour or two would have you fully up to speed.

Are you shooting these in matches?
Where are you located ?

Yes, I'll be shooting them at Magnolia pretty much every weekend in either Steel, USPSA, or Icore.
I am in Flowood near Dogwood.
My thought right now is to try the 125 LRN, about 4.5grn of Unique, at about 1.15 OAL ( if it clears the lands ).
One question I have, is how do I know what OAL to start the 125 FP at for the same powder charge and to achieve the same velocity? I assume the FP changes the OAL measurement does it not?

I'm no 9mm expert, but I'll do what I can to help until some experts come along... We do need to hook you up with a local 9mm guy and get some good hands-on help. I am in HTB and am more of a .40 loader, but if I can be of help, let me know.
I like to at least look at the manufacturer's data. Unfortunately, Alliant's Unique data is pretty slim. They have a 124 Gold Dot Hollowpoint with a minimum OAL of 1.12 and a max charge of 5.8 grains and that is about as close as it gets to what you want to load. There is some useful info here though. Lead will typically make velocity (and pressure) with less powder (1/2 gr. is a good, but rough, rule of thumb for 9mm/.40/.45). Since 4.5 is well under 5.8 it should be fine. The minimum OAL is useful, too.
I looked at Hodgdon's data and it is a bit better: http://data.hodgdon.com/cartridge_load.asp
Hodgdon lists the cartridge overall lenth for a 124 LRN at 1.169 and for a 125 LCN at 1.125. This makes sense, as you assumed the flat nose will have a shorter OAL. I believe the LCN is essentially a flat point, see here which is my understanding as well.
Do you have any FMJ's or LRN factory rounds? Measure a few of their OAL's to get an idea, but 1.15 sounds in the right ballpark from the above for the LRN and should easily clear the lands. I'd be willing to bet you could go out close to the 1.169 and still clear. As to your question on what OAL to start the 125 FP for the same powder charge to achieve the same velocity, I don't think anyone can tell you that. Different bearing surface, different depth into the case, different bullet makeup, etc, equals too many variables. You can guess, but whenever you try a previously untried brand or style of bullet you will have to work up from the bottom again.
Hope that helps a little.

OAL is a tricky subject. True, seating the bullet deeper will more than likely increase the pressure. But my main concern with OAL is, will the rounds fit in the mag? The best thing to do is find factory ammo with similiar shaped bullet and measure those. Make notes..... write the dimensions down for future reference.
The other issue reloading 9mm is the taper crimp. It is easy to put too much taper crimp on the ammo. You should see a clear step-down from the exterior edge of the case mouth to the surface of the bullet. If you pull a crimped bullet and there is a noticable channel around the bullet where the case mouth was, you have crimped too much.

Thanks for the info guys,
And Bryant, I'll be needing info on .40 soon enough HA, so I will pick your brain on that subject when it comes time.

Reloading
I didn't see that you bought a reloading manual when you got your supplies. That is the first thing you should have cause it tells you all. I started reloading in 1960 and my first manual was given to me. I recommend the Hornady but I have also had others and they are all good. Go by their recommendation and you can't go wrong.

I use the speer manual and the hornady manual but also had a hard time finding any info about lead bullets as a lot of manufactureres no longer make lead bullets. I started at the minimum load and actually ended up backing down from there. I shoot a 40sw 180gr fn with universal clays 3.9gr and get 810fps.
