Navy SEAL negligent discharge

Post by Bitwise on Thu Jan 05, 2012 7:12 pm

Just stumbled across this news article in which a young Navy SEAL, in order to demonstrate that his weapon was not loaded, pointed it at his head and pulled the trigger.

Wow. So tragic and so hopelessly stupid.

Sad loss for his friends and family. America lost a huge investment. Hard to believe someone with that amount of trigger time would do that. One reason I get so mad when someone sweeps me with their weapon even when I know it's unloaded.

thats only about a million or so of our tax dollars gone = (

So sad to put yourself through the most intensive military program we have and PASS and to be killed by your own weapon on ACCIDENT = (

I'll bet his lady friend won't be able to sleep for a while - and will probably become an antigunner.

Stupid unloaded guns will get you every time! Alcohol and guns are not a good combination for sure. Waste of what was sure to be a bright future serving his country

Someone that has gun handling safety embedded in their mind doesn't pull that stunt drunk or sober. Appears he was seriously lacking in that area.

What a waste.

#1 Rule of gun handling- The gun is always loaded until YOU make sure it's not.

I don't think I could check to see if my gun was unloaded and put it to my head and pull the trigger. Just the thought of it makes me feel ill even if I knew it was unloaded. There are some things you just do not do.

Its really hard to believe a trained seal would do this...

but as you read down a bit you find where He and girlfriend had been doing a lot of drinking at a bar.

Bad combination...booze and guns

and Bel - That's probably a couple mil down the drain in reality

Not hard for me to believe. I used to work with couple of retired Seals, both of them were dumber than doorknobs. Doug's right trained stupid is still stupid.

You can teach a man to shoot but teaching him not to be a moron is a tricky thing.

The serviceman, who had been drinking with a woman at a bar

It doesn't say how much or how little he drank or how intoxicated he was. I can't imagine being drunk enough to point a gun at my head and pull the trigger.

Sorry guys but I feel if this is what we are turning out as supposedly our "best of the best", then something is wrong! Any idiot with proper gun training knows to never do this. Maybe the person who trained this guy should be addressed. It is truly a sad day for America, and a waste of tax dollars. I will agree with BUBBAT, I too know some green berets that are dumber than bricks.

Trained or not, this is why we don't mix alcohol and guns, period

To build off what others have said, trained as stupid is still stupid; trained, stupid and drunk is way worse.

Perhaps it was meant to be. Maybe a higher power knew he would get a lot of others killed or botch a critical mission sometime in the future.
