Sheriff's opinion on NFA items, Rankin county

Post by LugerT on Thu Jan 05, 2012 9:29 pm

Does anyone have any experience with the Sheriff of Rankin county as far as obtaining the leo sign off for a personal form 1 or form 4. I ask since I am looking to purchase a can and build an sbs. Also the trust route appears appealing. Any information as to recommended lawyers that are versed in NFA trusts would be appreciated and if possible some ballpark figures on said services expense.

Thanks for the suggestion, I met him briefly at cola warrior through ar15.com last year. Does anyone know of the sheriff's standings on nfa signatures if I did for some reason go the non-trust way?

I believe the NFA notification is just that a notification. If I am correct the sign off may be discontinued as we speak or soon. The LEO does not approve the transfers.

Well are you in Brandon...or Rankin Cty....If Brandon - you get to go see your chief at Brandon PD....

Removing the LEO signature requirement is being "considered" by ATF...it aint a done deal.....so who knows if it will happen...I'm betting they don't change it, but ATF knows that about 99% of the apps coming in are Trusts and not signatures...I'm amazed actualy that its up for consideration

I can't speak to Rankin Cty but the old sheriff in Hinds would not and I would suspect that Rankin aint no better

Just get you a NFA trust done...its simple, ez, not very expensive and has other advantages like being able to have loved one in possession of your item...otherwise its just you and no one else

2ALawyer can hook you up....Get R'Done

the wait times are pretty substantial right now....its been worse though...pretty much looking at 6 months on ATF approval

Rankin County is a NO GO!
Went by there to ask and the clerk and another person said I could try if I wanted but said it would be a waste of my time cause he wouldn't even sign off for them.
I told them I have better things to do with my time.

We have a new sheriff in Rankin County as of Jan 1. I don't know his views on NFA, and I don't know of anyone that has asked him. If you do go to the SO, don't ask anyone but the sheriff. Nobody there knows what he will say yet. They will just repeat what the old sheriff said.

Didn't think about the new sheriff.
I'll probably do a trust either way tho.

I am very interested...Brandon PO and previous Sheriff both have been rumored not to sign. Looks like the Trust is the only route for Rankin Co. If that changes...inquiring minds need to know!

I talked to new Sheriff Bailey back on memorial day and he said he was all for it, but that was before the election and would say anything to get votes but if I run into a buddy of mine ill ask him if he knows.

Leo does have to sign off on NFA items. It is a C&R ffl that the leo is only notified, went through that about a year ago.

Thank you for the suggestions everyone. I will have to see what Bailey's stance on it is.

I used quicken willmaker to make out my trust. Had a notary stamp and sign it, and that was it. I have one stamp approved with and am on month 5 waiting for another.

I have a few forms individually and I eventually went to a trust. Trust is so much easier. No fingerprint, no picture and no CLEO BS. My sheriff signed off on one for me but he made it clear that he wouldn't do it again. I don't understand the resistance to this. As someone else stated, CLEO doesn't approve anything. They just sign to the best of their knowledge you aren't an ax murderer. Anyway, there is more than one person that you can use. I used a police chief in my town even though I'm not in the city limits. App went through fine. I've also used the District Attorney, app went through fine. However, now that I have my trust from 2alawyer, I don't have to worry about it.

The trust is the way to go. You can put whomever you want in the trust and they can have legal ownership of the item whereas individually it's a felony if anyone but you has possession. Kind of stupid but that is the way it works.

I would love love love for any CLEO to just sign off the damned form. We will get it done with or without you anyways. thumbs up

Adding an additional expense (trust) on top of something that costs a lot of money anyways bothers me. If he wanted to "keep control" of the process, he would just do the sign off, and then know who is getting them. NOT signing them removes himself from the process.

Exactly. I explained this to my CLEO but he still has the position taht he doesn't want his signature on anything associated with these kind of weapons. It shows me that he is more interested or afraid of his political standing than my 2a rights. Sad as it's really just ignorance.
