3.5 or 7 moa red dot for pistol?

Post by beltfed on Fri Jan 06, 2012 10:04 am

Im shopping for a Docter red dot for my FNP 45 Tactical. The slide is already milled to accept these optics. My questin is regarding dot size for pistol. The Docter Red Dot is offered in two dot sizes, 3.5 and 7 moa.

My instinct tells me to opt for the 3.5 for finer shot placement but then my common sense tells me that a 7 MOA dot is fine for anything under 50 yards which is about the limits for accurate pistol fire.

I want to get the Docter in earth brown color but they are only available in the 7MOA. The brown sight will match the FNP 45's dark earth finish as well, which I would prefer.

The 3.5 MOA Docter is available in black only, which would give the opporotunity to use the sight on my carbines and allow better accuracy at 100+ yards. Primarily the sight will live on the FNP 45 Tactical but I may want to move it over to an AR every once in a while.

Yalls thoughts?

I haven't used the Doctor brand but I've got several red dots mounted on handguns and rifles. I would go with the 7 on the pistol. I've tried the small dot on a pistol and at close range it was sometimes hard to find the dot, especially if it was bright and sunny.
