bulged brass

Post by canebreaker on Fri Jan 06, 2012 4:24 pm

I've been reloading for a long time. Now I'm getting bulged brass that won't go into the cylinder, 38 spl. 357. What have I started doing wrong?
What can be done to correct the problem?

You should not have that with 38 or 357 ... are you using a full-length sizing die? Do you ge the bulge AFTER shooting them in your handgun? As asked above - where is the bulge ... pictures would be nice ....

Not a wrinkle bulge in the case. Some of them won't go into the cylinder. Mostly in the 357's. Am I not expanding the case enough? Just enough for the boolit to enter the neck.
I'm using Lee carbide dies, the same 38 spl that I've had since 1991.
I'll save some for when we meet.

If the .357 cases won't go all the way in the cylinder, and if you've shot a lot of mild loads
through .38 cases in that same revolver, what can happen is that in the 1/10" or so ahead
of the mouth of a .38 case, powder residue and lubricant can accumulate and over time make
that revolver impossible to chamber the longer .357 case, you might try finding a chamber
brush for that caliber and really scrubbing the heck out of that cylinder and then try your
.357 loads.

45flattop has a very good point and what i had as i´ve had this problem was that the brass had different length and for the taper crimp i made, i got only some longer brass for testing and later the shorter ones came mixed by. So the shorter ones had not a propper crimp and sticked at the crusts that the .38 Special rounds left.

i will blast 10,000 rounds a year from my 38 and if you ever try to put a 357 in there most of the time it wont go. Also if you put to much bell on the case and not enough crimp to smooth it out but most of the time that stops you right at the cyilnder mouth.

i have sized some pretty bulged brass and my sizer takes it all out.

From all the above it sounds like you may still have too much bell in the case mouth - use a roll crimp ..... or, your cylinder is duirty and will not permit proper case fit -- OR - Both conditions are present .. --- this is assuming you are using a full length sizing die ...

Like I said, not all of them, just some of them.
I'll run the next batch through the decapper die a second time.
I'll expand the mouth just enough to hold a boolit.
I'll save all that won't chamber for our meeting.

It could be a simple fix. Usually the bullets sized .357 or .358" cause bulges in the ammo when seated. Especially full wadcutter loads. I have a tight chambered K38 and I use .356" wadcutter bullets in it. .358" full wadcutters will not chamber in my revolver.

I have some .356, 102 and 124 gr rn boolits. I'll try them on the wrinkled cases.
