Atip with service rifle shooting

Post by Doug Bowser on Mon Jan 09, 2012 1:04 am

This is part of another post.

If you are shooting a service rifle at 600 yards, never run the cartridges through the magazine. The action of the round being fed into the chamber can cause the bullet to be bent slightly in the case and accuracy may be effected. When loading an M1-a singly put the bullet end of the cartridge into the chamber and load the base of the ctg into the magazine lips. By trial and error see how far the bullet end of the cartridge can be inserted into the chamber and still have the head of the case enage the magazine lips and load the ctg when the bolt is pulled to the rear and let go.

When loading the Ar15, lay the ctg on top of the empty magazine follower and be sure the rifle is held vertically. Trip the bolt release and be sure not to tip the rifle to the side.

When loading this way use CCI primers as the bolt of the rifle will close vilolently. I have had a slam fire with Rmington and Federal primers

Wolf Small Rifle Magnum Primers work well also.

I've used the Wolf and Tula primers and had no slam fires.

One person asked me aout the tip

When loading the AR at 600 in the prone position you say to hold the rifle vertically. Don't you mean horizontal? Or did I read it wrong?

The rifle will be horozontal from front to back, I was referring to right to left vertical. If you tip the rifle, sometimes the round will not feed straight and it will jam when feeding and bend the ctg. A bent ctg is not accurate.

I have never used Wolf primers at 600 yards. I would like to test them before using them at 600. It is a bad thing to have a slam fire but it is almost as bad to have inaccurate ammunition. One of the slamfires with the AR15 was at a Regional Match. I was not DQ'd because the round hit more than 12 feet in front of the line. I used the charge handle and forward assist to slowly load the rest of the slowfire rounds that day. I lost 1 sighter instead of a round for record. "All shots count". The primer was a Remington small rifle primer. I expended the rest of the Remington primed ammo in pratice and never had another slamfire in 800 rounds.

I use the Wolfs in my match AR and my 6.5 Grendel in FPR. Have not had an issue in over 1000 rounds, most single load. Give them a try. They're also a good value.
