Sierra Palma Bullet

Post by jsthntn247 on Mon Jan 09, 2012 8:40 am

I see that the 155 Sierra palma bullet supposedly has a bc of .505. That seems a little high for such a light .308 bullet. Any of you guys ever shot this one?

Yes. The new Palma bullet (2156) is longer and more pointed than the old Palma (2155). The bullet has a variable G1 BC and the .504 BC is above 2700 fps.The Berger 155.5 FB has a .464 BC. I am currently testing both in a Savage 12 FTR.
They both hold elevation very well out to 600 yards with moa scope adjustment up from 100 yards very comparable to my .223 80 SMK's and I have Both 155's and 155.5's up to around 2950 fps.
The 155 weight bullets will be my go to round whenever I decide to shoot it in competition.
Many folks believe a heavier bullet bucks the wind better and I really don't know. However, if you check out the weight of the bullets that the F-Open folks shoot, I think you will find they shoot lighter bullets in their rifles.
But, these are just my observations. YMMV

Had it with the VV N550 powder , good but not worth the extra price to the Lapua 150 grs LockBase. Normally i use the 167grs. bullets and the 185grs. for bad weather. But the 150grs are a good choice for Long Range no matter if it is windy or not, except rain.

Guess I should have also mentioned my components.

Lapua Brass
IMR 8208 XBR powder
155.5 Berger loaded .080" off lands or Sierra 155 loaded .040" off lands
Remington 9 1/2 primers

Plan to try some Wolfs. Had the Remington's for my Garand loads.

Why rain?

I´ve shot a lot rounds during a rainy season and found that the grouping is getting deeper and opened up more with light bullets. Than i gave the 185 grs Lapua Silver Scenar a try and it gave a very good grouping at heavy rain. With light rain the influence isn´t big but at heavy rain the 150grs.bullets opend up at 300m from a 18mm diameter ( 5 rounds) to a bit more than 52mm. The 185grs had a 5 round grouping at 23mm and at heavy rain the had only 34mm. That is my experience.

Gotcha. Could be the dynamics of the weight of the rain negatively impacting the round. But, I'm no ballistics engineer, so my motto is "whatever works best, works best!"
