Hot Bluing needed

Post by fastarrow on Mon Jan 09, 2012 10:03 am

I have a co-worker that has an old double barrel shotgun that he inherited. He said it's an ESSIX (sp.) Anyway he wants it reblued and he's only going to display it not shoot. I told him I would have it Black T'd. That way he wouldn't have to worry about it. But he's set on reBluing it. Any idea of a Gunsmith on or around the coast that still reblues firearms?

My friend Emri Stidham does, he's in Robertsdale, Alabama, much closer than Utica.

I also had Daniel in Mt. Olive blue a gun for me, he's very reasonable.

Daniel just did the barrel on my old 10/22 He was reasonable on his price and I was satisfied with his work. I would take something else to him if I needed to.

The old double barrel guns were rust blued instead of hot blued. The barrels are put together with soft solder. The hot blue mixture is above the melting temperature of the solder. You'll have a tank full of barrel parts. Brownell's sells the rust bluing solution of you could use the cold blue on it.

Good call, I'd forgotten that they were soldered but was going to post rust bluing can be done at home, it just takes patience.

I would cold blue it if he is only going to use it for display. Cold bluing will hold up fine under controlled conditions and he won't have to worry about solder issues.

Definitely....as big a supporter as I am for Black-t, if the gun is going to be well taken care of and used very little then rust bluing sounds like the best option. Now if it were going to be a shooter/beater then I'd definitely have it black-t'd
