Next CMP Trip???
I'm sure that many of you received the email from CMP regarding the 2000 service grade Garands that are in stock.
I've had the Garand fever for a while and in the next 90 days, I'll be in a position to pick one up. The only problem is that I don't really know what to look for in terms of a good one. I'm not interested in a museum piece....would rather have a nice shooter that I'd be proud to keep in the family.
So, who wants to help?

I love my HRA Service Grade. Check them out first. I think they were some of the best bargains!

Don't overthink it. Get one with little throat & muzzle wear and you'll be good to go. If they are not tagged with the numbers, you can borrow gauges from the armorer's there.

I will add that if you get one that has functional issues, CMP will make it right.

Rw, just give them a call. I'm not really up to date, but last I heard they had some used Kimbers...probably gone now. Or cruise around the Smallbore section on the CMP site

Still regret not getting a Anschutz 54 when I was last there. I think they were $450 sans sights. A little beat up, but the action is worth that much.

Fill out form, copy of CCW, copy of MRPC id badge, and birth cirtificate(i think) and mail it in and your good to go. Do it before hand from what I hear.

Also need proof of marksmanship. Firearms permit, military ID, hunters education certificate, for example.
One form needs to be notarized. Pretty sure you can just take them with you if going in person.

They will notarize the form there -- no problem. If you are going, I would suggest you just take the paperwork with you and NOT mail it in. If you use the Magnolia Badge, you MAY have a problem because the way the badge is made, they think it expired on Dec 31, 2011 .. Argue with them!! -- right Shoe? Tried to get Magnolia to change it this year but it did not happen for some reason.
If prior military, a DD214 will be accepted for prior marksmanship training.

Some tips on selecting a Garand ...
http://www.msgunowners.com/t8345-how-to-pick-out-a-cmp-garand
If the store is not too busy, ask one of the armorers behind the counter to help you. Tell them are a looking for a "good shooter" and they will help you pick one out.
I can not go -- never been without brining something back home with me --- and I already have way too many CMP rifles!! .... the temptation is just too great for me ....

You can also join the Garand Collector's Association ($40), the Mississippi Firearms Owner's Association ($10), or any other state association for your club membership requirement.

You are welcome to come but I'm staying the whole weekend so I can go to the most awesome gun show around, the Alabama Gun Collector's show in Birmingham. I have a friend that sets up a table so I stay with him and swap out watching his table.
