New AR owner here! Tell me how I did!
Finally bit the bullet and decided to build an AR. I wanted to see how inexpensive I could assemble a quality AR, decided to go with a Spikes Tactical Calico Jack stripped lower ($90)(my one splurge), and a Stag Arms lpk from AIM ($50). Went with a 16" mid-length Palmetto State upper with a lightweight Chrome-lined 1:7 barrel ($400).
It's not quite complete yet, I've got a Troy fixed rear battlesight ($50) coming and I still need a mag ($10), but what do you think? Total cost is $600, I tried to pick components with excellent reputations for quality, so how'd I do??

I built mine on a PlumCrazy complete lower so I built mine for about $540, also went with the PSA upper 16" chrome lined barrel but bought it black friday for $379 shipped, but im happy with mine and have the second one already under way. PSA stripped lower, PSA lpk minus trigger, and waiting on the next part to buy.
There fun to shoot thats for sure

Sounds like you did pretty good. Only way you could have gone cheaper is either doing Plum crazy built lower, or snagging one of those PSA stripped $50 lowers back on black Friday and Christmas weekend

Yeah, I missed the Black Friday deals, but I really wanted a mid-length anyways. I could have gone with a PSA lower for $50, but to me there is just something cool about having a pirate emblem on my AR that makes the extra cost worth it. I knew I wanted an aluminum stripped lower for my first one so I could see how it all went together.
I just realized I forgot the stock assembly. Add $45 for a UTG milspec collapsible assembly from Joeboboutfitters.com. Yeah, its not really namebrand, but I'll pick up a Magpul CTR used somewhere in the future. So my total is more like $645 plus transfer.

The spikes lowers are some of the coolest on the market. $90 isn't bad for one at all. I'd still love one of the zombie ones

Photos will have to come after the football game. Laptop is being used right now to stream ESPN to the TV, and I haven't figured out yet how to post photos from my phone.

A few pics:

I can't wait to see it with the Troy Battlesight on the top and a mag in the well. Now to start the ammo fort of 5.56!

Great build on the cheap ... seems this is the way to go for anyone wanting an AR ... the prices of AR should continue to come down ... we can hope!!

Re: New AR owner here! Tell me how I did!
Thanks guys. I am looking forward to shooting it soon. My rear site is apparently being held hostage by the post office. I had it sent first class from Primary Arms, and looked it up on tracking. Seems it went from TX, to A sorting facility in VA, then it departed the facility on the morning of the 9th, and came back into the same facility that night. That was the last update tracking showed. Remind me not to use the postal service next time. It was mailed on the 6th and estimated delivery was "1-3 days."
Getting ready for this thing to become functional! I think I will try to color the Calico Jack rollmark in with white crayon while I wait.

the fun part is that now you'll have to spend another 400.00 and shoot it 1000 times before the action really starts to feel smooth and gets broke in.
