Haley Barbour...Stupid?
On the murderers and rapist that worked at the Governors Mansion that he pardoned: ""I have so much confidence that I have allowed my grandchildren to play with those five men," Barbour said Friday. "I've let them ride their tricycles outside (the Governor's Mansion) while those men looked after them."

Yep, I'm with him like you are Obama. I sure wish he could take the murderers with him, since he's so comfortable with them. I wasn't satisfied with his response at all. Saving us taxes??? Hell, I'll pay more to keep murderers and child molesters locked up. If he was concerned about our state's expenses, he should have given his salary back and left it at that. I hope he leaves MS for good this time. Good riddance to fat rubbish. Thank God our new Governor is ex-LEO and ain't likely to pardon anyone, not even the traditional ones that serve the mansion. Life without parole means just what it says and really shouldn't be messed with, especially by ignorant people. BTW, that would go for me, too, if I deserved the sentence. This man thinks he's done a good thing in the name of religion, but I'm afraid he's just done something exceptionally stupid in the name not having enough sense to pour piss out of a boot.

Yeah, he wouldn't be so lax if one had raped his wife, murdered his mother or molested one of his grandkids. When a jury decides life without parole instead of a death penalty, I'm sure they think the man will never see the light of day. Sure, they're all good Christians and such who's only crime commited in jail is singing too loud at the jail house Church. All of them are con men and will be right back to doing what they did to get them in prison.
I think of all the families who agreed to a bargain to not have to go relive it in the court room. A slap right to their face. That's Haley's legacy and a sad one it is.

Whatever he is, he is not stupid.
He is looking out for No. 1.
He will never run for office again.
He MIGHT get a diplomatic appointment if a Republican president is elected, and this negative publicity will not hurt his prospects for such an appointment much if at all.
He will continue lobbying in Washington and this will not hurt his business at all.
He might have made a quarter million dollars on the pardons. I suspect that he got SOMETHING for doing it. No way he did it strictly out of benevolence---he can't know all those criminals.

I gotta admit - the whole thing is a head scratcher to me...In his interview He talked a lot about forgiveness and Christianity etc etc.
That's all fine and good...but for the life of me I can't figure out what He could have gained from this. He can't possibly need the money...and the damage to his political career is not repairable....and you know He still cares about that.
I know his wife was wanting out of poltics...maybe He listened to her a bit too much
He sure miscalculated the negative publicity.

IIRC, WLBT reported that among others Mrs. Irby donated $10,000 to his campaign / one of his causes? I will look for it... the best guv'ner that money can buy!NRA_guy wrote:Whatever he is, he is not stupid.

Yea, I wasnt meaning generally, more like asking the question "Don't you think he was stupid for allowing 4 murderers to watch over his grandchildren"

Well I for one really liked Haley Barbour as Governor, thought he did a great job most of the time, But to me he sure dropped the ball on this one no matter what his reasoning. I can't see ANY reason to do what he did.

Yea, that was 10k that was known and reported from that family. Wonder how much went or is about to go undetected. This is one thing that I just don't understand. I know it's in the constitution and therefore states adopt it on the state level, but..... in my opinion, ONE man should NOT have the ability to pardon ANYbody. That is why we have parole boards, etc etc. One person can much more easily be swayed, bought, threatened, etc into doing something. I disagree with it whole heartedly, that is too much for one person. period.
They should make it where if anyone a person pardons commits another crime, the one that pardoned him is able to be brought up on charges of contributing to that crime. That would curtail WHO they parole. Hell, one of those had just been before the parole board two weeks earlier.... DENIED. Go figure
Reason he did it: Personal Gain. Plain & Simple. There is no other reason I can come up with.

Re: Haley Barbour...Stupid?
I listened to National People's Radio this a.m., a show called 'On Point' from WBUR out of Boston (you know people in BOSTON understand Mississippi so well) devoted entirely to this topic. They even had a professor from Little Rock, Mississippi (sic) to comment on how white Southern Christians are more "Old Testament" than New Testament... I think in Haley's mind he really didn't expect the uproar, he is abandoning politics for good, has enough $$ that he really does not care what people think and is doing what he feels is "right". Of course I disagree but after listening to him, I think he believes it's OK.

I don't think Haley Barbour EVER did anything that he thought was a mistake---nor do I think he would ever admit having made a mistake.
I think his ego is twice as large as his body.
And I don't think he expected the negative publicity that his pardons generated.
Mind you: I voted for him every time he ran and likely would again because I always vote against Democratic candidates.
