First bullets reloaded!

Post by wesm on Sat Jan 14, 2012 5:59 pm

I finally finished reloading my first rounds today. 19 rounds (was gonna be 20 but I made a beginners mistake on one) of .38 Spl loaded with Unique powder, 5.2 gr up to 6.4 gr. On top are 125 gr Hornady XTP hollowpoints. Heading out to Magnolia tomorrow to test them out!

They sure look pretty sitting in that case. Maybe I ought take a picture of them before I shoot them. :-)

OK, here you go:

How does this crimp look? That part kind of confused me. I watched a video on Youtube, but not sure if I got it right?

I got a bullet puller. Told my friend I have a $20 tool to recover a $0.20 bullet, haha.

I shot all 19 reloads today and had no problems. The min. loads were almost comically light out of my 4" S&W model 66 and the 6.4 gr loads just started to have a little bit of authority. I was shooting offhand, not from a bench, so I don't know how to select a particular charge to continue reloading with. Prob just start loading 6.0 to 6.4 grains of Unique in the future with the rest of these jhp's. Then I'll start loading lead SWCs when I have some more cash to purchase some.

I was looking for some 135 gr Gold dots to load for my wife, but haven't found any locally. Anybody seen any around Jackson?

Why so light of a bullet?

Well, its a long story. I was looking for some lead bullets and had a Bass Pro gift card from Christmas to buy components with, but BP apparently doesn't sell lead bullets, so I got the cheapest jhps they had in stock to cut my teeth on. In the future, I want some heavier lead bullets for plinking and 135 gr Gold Dots for defense rounds for my wife, because from what I've seen, those should perform best out of her 2" s&w.

Isn't the short barrel the 135 gr Gold Dot? That's what I meant either way. The Speer manual that came with my kit has load information for that bullet, which I'd like to do.

I have a looong way to go before I start casting. Still need to get proficient at handloading! Haven't even started rifle calibers yet!

Yes, I'm loading on a Rockchucker Supreme. I got the Master reloading kit for Christmas.

And to respond to 22lrfan, yes I am definitely hooked. I just wish I had more time and money to spend on it.

Congrats....

I loaded 200 .38 sp yesterday
148gr TCSWC ( curtesy of Beladran mold)
3.5gr TiteGroup
CCI 500 primer

I loaded another 280 of the same today. I have exactly 50 unloaded .38s left. Finally put a dent in that 4lbs of TiteGroup I bought.

Surplus City has the Nosler 158gr JHP, thought they are not cheap. My gun sure loves them though.
