The article wasn't real clear on whether the seller was questioned. The pawn shop probably gave the guy the money and after he left checked the numbers.
I would ALMOST rather catch the scum that steals from me than get my items back.

Still hope for me then...had 2 AR-15's and a mini-14 stolen in 1981 that have never been recovered.

Are they listed in the stolen firearms database? They would show up anytime someone ran the serial #.

What happens if they can't find the owner? The article said they were having difficulty.

It'll go to the department where it was reported as stolen. I bought a 39 S&W at a show one time and pawned it a while later then JPD called and wanted it because ot was stolen! I guess they knew who had stole it because I was never even questioned. The bad part was I had sold it before JPD contacted me. Anybody could have a stolen gun if they don't use an FFL.

Yes they are. Every few years I'll get a call or letter from the Sheriffs department just to confirm that I personally haven't recovered them.

Good idea Thanks! I need to call on my 686 just to let them know I don't have it, although it's probably in the bottom of the river. crying

You can have a stolen gun if you use a FFL if it is used. Most dealers do not run serial numbers on guns they take in trade. But there is a traceable with the ffl.
I have a ruger 41 mag(first gun) that was given to me by my father. It was his brother gun. They gun was gone (stolen) for about 10 years and it showed back up. We live in a small town, they send word to my uncle they had it and come get it. But since he had some unpaid tickets, he had dad go get it. And after a little talking they gave it to him. (22 years ago, that will not happen now, they are not giving anything now). Uncle did not want it so I ended up with it. I love that gun and story.
