Flat shooting rimmed cartridges?

Post by Caleb C on Mon Jan 16, 2012 12:39 pm

I want to start doing some handgun hunting with a T/C Encore. The barrel will likely be 15”. I’ve heard all of the stories about misfires due to head space issued in single shot rifles / pistols when using rimless cartridges. I’d like to avoid this. So I’m looking for a relatively flat shoot rimmed cartridge that can burn up enough powder in a short barrel to be accurate and still have semi-respectable velocities. I prefer bottle necked as opposed to strait wall cases but that’s not a deal breaker. I’d like to be able to shoot out to 200 yards if at all possible. It would also be nice to have commercial brass. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check out the jd jones line of cartridges. Most are built on 444 cases.

Or Gary Reeder line the GNR's

I remember you telling me about that last time I was throwing this idea around. I’m VERY impressed with the 375 JDJ. It would be really nice to have commercial brass though. Being able to buy ammo off the shelf in a pinch would be nice too. I guess you can’t have everything though.

May be I just need to go a head and order the frame that we I’ll be forced to finally make a decision on the caliber.

just stick a 444 case in a 375jdj die and thats it cases are super easy to make. you can order ammo from jd jones if you want but its just easier and cheaper to do it yourself.

$700 just for the barrel? Not for me man. I'd be very hard pressed to put more than $300 in it.

I was thinking about a 460 S&W now that you mention it. They'd be pretty easy to load for.

How about a 30-30 Win? It might be ok assuming that I could find something other than the old flat nosed bullets.

How about 7.62x54R? That could be a disaster in a short barrel though. I imagine the fireball out of the end of the muzzle would be impressive.

Something 35 cal or over would be nice. It would be legal for primitive season too.

Being a single shot, you can load any bullet you want in the 30-30.

7-30 Waters (30-30 necked down to 7mm) would be another good choice. Here's an article that discusses performance, including out of a TC. For some reason I had to scroll right to view it: http://www.reloadingroom.com/index_files/7-30.htm

You must have had a mind fart! There are probably more .308" bullets on the market than any other!

460 smith and Wesson is what I'd go with.

This type of discussion would best be solved with quickload, and I haven't bought it... yet!

.307 Winchester. It's a rimmed .308. Brass and loaded ammo is available.

I know there are a lot of bullets out there. I load for my 308s. The only problem is velocity. I’m not sure I’d be able to get enough speed from a 30-30 in a 15” barrel to ensure reliable expansion of a bullet intended to impact at higher speeds. When you consider they’ll be impacting the target inside of 200 yards they might be ok.

Yea. Yea. The 375 JDJ is the obvious choice. It’s a heavy hitter with a proven track record. This solution needs to be practical as well though. I don’t want to spend a fortune on the barrel. Besides, I’ve already got a ton of 30-30 brass.
