A spare you say? How much you want for it?

I don’t have the frame yet. I was thinking about ordering one this week.

I’m not sure I’d be able to get enough speed from a 30-30 in a 15” barrel to ensure reliable expansion of a bullet intended to impact at higher speeds. When you consider they’ll be impacting the target inside of 200 yards they might be ok.

Yea. Yea. The 375 JDJ is the obvious choice. It’s a heavy hitter with a proven track record. This solution needs to be practical as well though. I don’t want to spend a fortune on the barrel. Besides, I’ve already got a ton of 30-30 brass.

You've got a ton of 30-30 brass? That makes my 7-30 Waters recommendation even better. Factory barrels are barely over $200, you can easily neck down your 30-30 brass, have lots of choices in 7mm hunting bullets, find factory ammo if you want to, have a lot less recoil than some of other suggestions, push 2500 fps out of a 14" - 15" barrel, and still have over 1100 foot pounds of energy at 200 yards. Google "7-30 Waters Contender" for more info.

A good deal on the 375 JDJ barrel may be tough to pass up though.

I was looking over some info on the 7-30 Waters. The numbers are pretty impressive. One thing I don’t like is having to fire form the 30-30 brass after isn’t been necked down. It seems that they only make these barrels for the Contender. I’d really prefer an Encore or a Pro Hunter. I’m sure some custom shop could make a barrel but that comes back to the whole cost issue. I really don’t want to have a lot of money in this.

Beladran, is your barrel for an Encore or Pro Hunter?

Doh! For some reason I completely read Contender and not Encore. Sorry. Yeah, barrel will be a good bit more than a little over $200. There are some aftermarket barrels or the custom shop option, but it looks like it will be pushing $400.

You won't be able to use the handgun for PW season at least not yet.. And with a Contender your limited to lower pressure rounds.. 30/30 is a good choice, 35 Rem (just in case they start letting handguns for PW season) or maybe even the new 6.8 SPC

I heard a rumor about Mississippi is getting a handgun season but that’s a conversation for another time. It’s probably BS anyway.

So…. I was just about to order the frame when I realized that I had to choose between Encore and Pro Hunter. I know the Pro Hunter has the swing hammer but will the barrels swap between the two? If one of you experienced T/C shooters could steer me in the right direction I’d sure appreciate it.

Well I just though that I was going to order a frame. It turns out that T/C has had some problems with filling orders since S&W absorbed them back in August. They are backordered with all of our distributors. May be I can find a good used one somewhere. It looks like this project may get put on the back burner again.

Bullets for the lever evolution round are now available to reloaders, have a good bc and are built to expand at lower velocities

I was having the same discussion a while back and it used to be in the book(the ones available in sporting goods stores, with the regulations in it), but it isn't now. I was considering another 44 or 35 Rem Contender, but the regulation stopped me from following through with it. Then low and behold it isn't in this years book. Kind of sucks that I sold my 10" Contender due to not being able to use it.

I think the original intent of the law was to keep you from carrying a handgun during the original muzzleloader season.

Realistically, there is no reason not to be able to use one during the season if you are able to use an Encore. The only difference it a couple inches of barrel and a stock.

If they keep opening up the regulations, they might as well just say go hunting between October 1 and January 31, and use what you would like.
