H&R Topper M48
RW called me last night and asked if id be interested in a 12ga H&R Topper. He told me the price and i said sure so i met him and picked it up. Its an "I" serial number so 1948 mfg.
Here it is:

This is the worst spot in the walnut stock but the forend is rough

Think it may need most of the guts polished/ replaced. I love the latch.
And whats that screw in front of the hammer? It holds the firing pin in.

Gonna tear into it after deer season. I want to make it new again. I know it aint worth much but i like the H&R shotguns and i think this will be a nice project and a good example of and old dog brought back to life. We'll see.
Thanks Randy

That's why I bought it, figured you'd have the patience to restore the old girl.
What about removing that chipped piece of stock and making it straight like Hannah's?

Looks like a fun project. How do you plan to finish the receiver. Most of the old ones I've had like that had case-colored receivers. They won't take bluing. This might be a candidate to practice with duracoat.

I will be ordering some gunkote or moly resin soon Joe if you want to try that on it, i already have the stuff to do a phosphate coat like they reccomend for the gunkote base coat. My black and tan mossbergs starting to look a little rough so its time to redo the receiver.

If i can get it up and running smoothly i will decide then what finish to use. I really like the color case hardened look. But thats pricy. May be wortb it if it shoots good. Time will tell

Looks like Joes gun adhd kicked in and im getting this back, will be cutting the stock first to get rid of the missing chunk... if that goes according to plan then ill work on the mechanicals. Unsure of the metal finish at the moment. May try my hand at re bluing. It will spend a week or so with the metal soaking in atf to work on the rust/crust thats built up inside it before i take it apart.

I haven't been there in a week. I was going at lunch today but got tied up. That resulted in Joe getting MY Texan. I'm going to start going by there every day!!!
