Woo Hoo!! Got a Rock Chucker!

Post by coolpapaj on Tue Jan 17, 2012 6:27 pm

This shooting bug I caught 2 months ago has latched on and won't let go!
How cool is a reloader called Rock Chucker? That just screams "buy me". And got a $50 rebate.

They way I figured it will cost 12.9 cents per round which means about $10.00 savings per 100 rounds using my own saved up brass. That equals 77.5 extra rounds I can shoot for the same price!!

My wife is gonna hate me.....

Just tell her how much you are "saving". Kinda like those nine pairs of shoes she bought because they were half price Smile

Good choice!! I got one at Christmas. Right now my bullets cost me about $25 each, but as I load more that cost/bullet ratio should go down, right? thinking

Here's my fuzzy math for 9mm.

Primers (Federal) at $36.00 per 1000 = 3.6 cents each
Bullets (Precision Delta) at $76.00 per 1000 = 7.6 cents each
Powder (Hodgdon Titegroup) $25.00 per pound. (6991 grains per lb) / (4.8 grains per round) = 1456 rounds. 2500/1456=1.7 cents per round.
Thats 12.9 cents each or $12.90 per hundred.

I didn't factor in the cost of the reloader because...well it just looked better if I didn't!
But if I save $10 per 100 rounds the $289 reloader will pay for itself after I've shot 2890 bullets. About 2 or 3 months.

Does this sound right?

One word: "Bulk". Buying stuff in bulk, in group buys when possible, will lower your cost substantially. Getting a pound of powder locally for $28 is fine when you're starting out. You'll find as time goes on you start stockpiling when you run across a deal. If you shoot a lot of pistol, consider casting your own. Over time, you'll cut that unit cost in half.

It's be a while since I bought.
Lee production pot 2 and 4 boolit molds about $150. and free lead. 158 gr boolits, 42 1/2 per lb. = free, after pouring about 80,000. I bought my HP-38 when it came on cardboard boxes, 8# $65.00. Buying primers in gross.
primers .02
powder .02 to .03
boolits free
brass free
labor of love
100 rounds $4. to $5.

I was able to buy Remmy primers local at Surplus City for $3.50 several months ago. I then bought CCI 500 ( which SC had not been stocking for many months) for 3.00 straight up in a bulk buy here.

Glad your haveing a good time with it... I know I enjoy it!

Canebreaker, you brought up something I haven't considered. I'm assuming you're talking about casting bullets. Is there any problem shooting non FMJ bullets? Or do you jacket them somehow.
I need to read up on this.

9mm is the least cost effective round to load but it's still a savings to crank them out on your own!

I started my reloading because I can't get factory loads for one of my rifles. Now I can't wait to get my own reloading area set up. It will be great therapy for life.

I found that it takes VERY few bullets to pay for itself if you reload any exotic round. For example my weathersby .257. 25 caliber bullets are cheap. Primers and powder too. The most expensive part of the 257 is the brass. since I saved all my brass and found some very old unprimed brass 3 gun shows ago I was able to get enough brass to reload. The bullets I shoot are 69.99 a box of 20. I can get 100 barns triple shock 25 cal bullets for $26 or so. So if one does all the math you can tell it saves a ton o fmone on the exotics.

Sounds like I need to start shooting something other than 9's and 40's so I can save even more!!

Dang, I'm starting to sound like my wife on one of her shopping sprees.

I got the handgun stuff to support the addiction, but started for the necessity of my 7x61 S&H rifle.
