Smith 627.... One thumb down..

Post by Beladran on Tue Jan 17, 2012 7:02 pm

I got my smith in today an the craftsmanship was crap! I think ray Charles did my machine work : (
First off the moon clip cut was terrible! There was burs an sharp edges all over the place. Grabs brass like vice grips, chamfer job was also crap! I have never seen so much machine marks an metal shavings on a firearm in my life. I just spent the last hour an half cutting an buffing on the cylinder.. Then one of the smith moon clips is not cut right it gets about half way in an stops like it hit a wall.. All rounds feed perfectly by their self. And I swear the trigger is a good 12-14 lbs lol.
625,627, an 610 is the models which all others are judged. I guess I got one off the bottom of the pile. O well.

Thats odd. I sold a 627, not long ago. I tried it first. It was a good shooter. The quality seemed right up there with what one would expect from a world class gun maker... and this comming from someone that really isn't into smiffs.

Maybe send it back???

I spoke to Mr. Jones on Monday, said he wouldn't be able to take anything in until the end of February.
I'm needed a couple of triggers worked on myself.

I picked up a recent 625, one of the Jerry Miculek "JM" models, and fortunately it must have come off the top of the pile or have been made early in the week as it is pretty nice. The trigger is very smooth but a bit heavy, around 12.5 double action and 4.25 or a bit more single, but otherwise it is pretty nicely finished and doesn't have any of the other problems mentioned. The funny thing is I have on old nickel S&W .38 Special, late 50's Model 10 I think, and it has some "issues". I can't therefore agree that the "old days" were always better. They had Friday afternoons back then, too you know...

I spoke to Mr. Jones in December and he didn't seem that interested in doing trigger work on the 625 for me which I guess coincides with what Beladran heard, although he did say something about late February as the earliest he would be able to even think about it or something to that effect. I'm sure I could pull a few strings and get him to look at it in late Feb., but I'm not really interested anymore as it's not a big deal to me and I don't plan on competing with it. Clark Custom over in Shreveport, LA and Apex Tactical have 6 and 6-8 week turnarounds, respectively, for what its worth, and both do very well respected work.

I know this is going to be a dumb question, but why not send it back to S&W and tell them to fix it properly or you want your cash back.

Personally if I got a gun or anything for that matter in as bad a shape as you say, I'd be on the phone to the company demand it be fix and not on my dime.

LOL. Who are you, and what did you do with the guy that just yesterday said:

I don't blame you for not wanting to send it back though. Because of applicable firesarms laws, they will do ANYTHING rather than actually swap it out for another one with a different serial number. That means someone at the factory will work on it and may or may not get it right or even know what they are doing. It may come back better but still not right or, worst case scenario, may come back "overworked" and even more difficult to make right than it is now. Although it may cost more, doing it yourself or having someone that really knows what they are doing make it right is sometimes the best option. Not to mention one or more trips back to the factory can be time consuming and may not even accomplish what needs to be done.
