? 25.06 or new 30.06
Just got back into deer hunting with old Remington Woodsmaster 30.06; don't mind the recoil but trigger pull is heavy and seems to lead to less than tight groups; on center but both high and low. Have a .17 Savage with accutrigger that I really enjoy shooting. Looking for a new gun for next season and thinking about moving down to 25.06 Savage with accutrigger based upon friends recommendation that if I'm not shooting over 150-200 yards, move down to 25.06 but don't know if I'd be better off with 30.06 with accutrigger. Thoughts? Or is it a shooter issue?

I have both & I like the 25-06 just little bit more than the 30-06. No reason at all for liking the 25 more... I just do.

Re: ? 25.06 or new 30.06
I have a 257 weatherby mag that I love. Its a little faster than the 25.06 and I hunted with it all season. I got it to shoot 600 yards so it suprises me that he recommended a caliber like that for under 200 yards. I would have said my 45-70 is deadly accurate out to 150 yards, and a 30-30 or 35 remington would be all you would need out to 200. I would go with the 30-06 since its pretty much the standard comparison for all other guns, ammo is plentiful and cheap, and i'm sure there are plenty of more good reasons for it.

You can't go wrong with a .30-06. Lots of choices in ammo and you can find it most anywhere.

Re: ? 25.06 or new 30.06
Thanks for the replies; maybe a little more info for other opinions; I have a number of Glocks and like the trigger/safety mechanism; I also carry a Ruger .380 day to day which has a heavy trigger pull but I usually have pretty tight groupings knowing that; I'm leaning towards a Savage 30.06 on a new rifle due to versatility with hogs/deer. etc.; any thoughts/opinons and am wondering if the accutrigger/Glock trigger is better prior to bang given its slow pull if recoil is not an issue?

The accutrigger and glock trigger are 2 ccompletely different animals. I have both of the '06's and both are nice calibers that will do the job. just for factory ammo sake, the 30'06 is certainly more plentiful.

30-06 is a great choice, will be able to easily find ammo in a variety of offerings. This is a good point if you dont reload.
I prefer the 25-06 ackley improved. It is accurate well beyond 600 yards. You will do well with either choice but based on your intended use sounds like 30-06 will be the best. for deer and hog a round loaded with Barnes 180gr will be a hammer.

the savage with accutrigger is a great shooting gun. I have sighted in two in 7mag for friends this year, i did barrel breakin on both for them along with sighting and a dope chart. both shot 3/4" 5 shot groups with factory ammo @100, there were some really great 3 shot groups. Those two are the only savages i have shot but wouldnt hesitate to buy one over a rem700 right now.

I have the Savage in the 30-06 with the AccuTrigger and AccuStock. I have been happy with mine.

Re: ? 25.06 or new 30.06
What model Savage does everybody like? I know the accutrigger is desired, but what model number?
I agree the 30-06 is an outstanding round, and have a nice M700 in it. But I really like the 7mm-08 now. It's short, reaches out there, and so far deer drt. I have 3 rifles in that caliber, and reload for it, so I'm hooked. The ammo is more readily available now, but nowhere near as common as the -06.
But you're gonna be fine either way- a new rifle! :-)

Between the two get a 30 06.
I would recommend a 308 for a few reasons
Plentiful factory ammo
Only 100fps slower than 30 06
Less muzzle blast
Less recoil
Shorter action
