I like 308 also plus 1 on all the above reasons, 30 cal. is soooooo common and available. easy to load.

I would recommend a 308 for a few reasons
Plentiful factory ammo
Only 100fps slower than 30 06
Less muzzle blast
Less recoil
Shorter action
There are more 3006 choices than 308 in the factory ammo world and they both cost about the same.
The recoil and muzzle blast differences of a 308 and 3006 are negligible given equal length barrels and bullet weights. http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm
rifle wt/recoil energy/recoil velocity
.308 Win. ... (150 at 2800) 7.5 15.8 11.7
.308 Win. ... (165 at 2700) 7.5 18.1 12.5
.308 Win. ... (180 at 2610) 8.0 17.5 11.9
.30-06 Spfd. (150 at 2910) 8.0 17.6 11.9
.30-06 Spfd. (165 at 2900) 8.0 20.1 12.7
.30-06 Spfd. (180 at 2700) 8.0 20.3 12.8
308 pro over 3006- short action, slightly more accurate but in hunting gun would never know it
3006 pro over 308- more versatile because it can handle heavy bullets should the need arise.

Yeah, '06 doesn't really come into it's own until you get up to the heavier bullets, and then it can definitely out-perform the .308. With 150 grain bullets it's pretty much a wash.
I'd go with the .30-'06. If I was going to go with anything else that is '06 based I'd go with the .280 Remington. It's almost 7 mag class.

I agree the 30-06 is an outstanding round, and have a nice M700 in it. But I really like the 7mm-08 now. It's short, reaches out there, and so far deer drt. I have 3 rifles in that caliber, and reload for it, so I'm hooked. The ammo is more readily available now, but nowhere near as common as the -06.
But you're gonna be fine either way- a new rifle! :-)
This is the Hunters series in the 7mm-08 with the Accutrigger and Accustock. I have this model in the 30-06.

Thanks righttown! Right on! :-). I may look for a 223 bolt action accutrigger in that model.

06' is an excellent choice, I have a Ruger MkII and a Browning Stalker A-bolt both in 06'... there's not much of anything in North America you can't hunt with an O6'... if you are looking for something with a tad less recoil you might look at a .243, have a couple of these (Savage and Thompson Center Icon) that I hunt/target shoot with. If you are considering a .25-06 a 24-26 inch barrel is a common recommendation in order to maximize the slower burning powder used in .25-06 factory ammo...I'm thinking of rechambering my Ruger to either .25-06 or .280 Remington...I reload and both calibers have a considerable appeal, just can't decide on which one!
