Garand Help
Does anyone in the Jackson area have throat and muzzle wear gauges for a Garand? I found a 1941 Springfield with a 1943 barrel that I would like to check before I decide to buy it or not. The price is high if the barrel is worn out.

I have the muzzle, but not the throat. I think Squeezer has both.

I have both. You are welcome borrow them. You'll have to come by my jod in Flowood to get them. I can bring them tomorrow.

Thanks Shoe for letting me borrow your gauges. The muzzle gauged over 3 and the throat was 4. I assume that's not good. Is there any hope of accuracy when the muzzle is over 3?
While I had them I measured my two Garands. They were both less than 1 on the muzzle gauge. The throats measured 3 on the IHC and 2 on the Springfield.

I think WWII barrels have passed from being considered shooters to having the right stamps for a restoration. I was surprised by an 03 collector in Birmingham who said he didn't care about bore condition, he wasn't going to shoot them anyway.
How much moola?

I'm probably going to make an offer on it. It's on consignment. The price is to high with the worn barrel. Gonna have to wait until after pay day.

Re: Garand Help
That is steep for a rack grade barrelled rifle.

Yeah, but if you want a WWII vintage, you are limited to what the market charges. CMP only has Korean era rifles, I think.
Personally, I would be comfortable with $600, assuming wood and overall condition were acceptable. You just accept that it's a collector piece and not a match rifle.

The ones from the CMP marked Winchester are WWII.

Re: Garand Help
All Winchesters were WWII vintage guns -- CMP still has a ton of WWII Springfield vintage -- Problem is, you will probably have to go to store a pick one out since CMP does not separate the WWII vintage Springfields from the Postwar guns. You will need to take with you the serial number range for the WWII production by Springfield.

You can put a sticky note on your CMP order requesting a Springfield WWII garand and they will try to honor your request.

Then you have to find one with a WWII barrel.
