Grandaddy's guns

Post by Eaglestroker on Fri Jan 20, 2012 9:56 am

Everyone has a few right? I had some out this morning and wanted to share them with you. The one day all I have is a camera phone! The first is a custom bench rifle. My grandfather is a man of many hobbies and ended up with a lot of old actions due to civil war interest. About 10 years ago I helped him stock this, which is about 6 ft tall.

The second is a .40 cal target muzzle loader. He stocked the rifle for a friends wife, the friend did all the silver work. Id like to take a deer with it some day! When the friend and wife split we got the rifle back. It's got a target trigger on it and is a real joy to shoot.

This last piece is a family heirloom. A Springfield trapdoor passed down from my great grandfather. I was told he bought it right after he returned from WWI for around $10. It's chambered in God's caliber, the 45-70 Government.

Nice! They don't make them like that any more and those stocks have to be a labor of love, because you couldn't afford to pay anyone to do them for you like that nowdays. Nice relics, for sure, and I'm sure they mean an awful lot to you.Smile

Consider them a blessing. The only things I have from either of my grandfathers are memories. I would certainly cherish them if I were you.

I probably couldn't afford the wood these days. Means more that he trusted them with me now rather than later. Glad everyone enjoyed the pictures!

It's a really nice job, looks better in person. Shoots as good as it looks too.

Do you know what year the trapdoor was made? The rear sight looks like the early type. The condition of the metal is better than any of my trapdoors.

I'll ask him, my grandad is a lucky man when it comes to well conditioned old guns. The Colt Navy I have is in as good of shape as any I've ever seen in a museum.
