50 Cal Ammo Cans
I've had these for many years, don't remember where or when I got them. I think I bought these at the Jackson Gun Show back in the early 70's. I am trying to date these. Anybody got a clue!!

Re: 50 Cal Ammo Cans
I have a few of those type ammo cans. I keep my gun cleaning stuff in one. Sorry, I can't help with dating them. However, I think they are WWII vintage.
The only bad thing about them is sometimes the closing bracket gets sprung and they won't stay closed unless you put something in the little hole. Me, I use a paperclip...........

I have one of those. Got it over 30 years ago long before I started shooting. Used it as a "dry box" on float trips. I was a smoker then, so other than the beer cooler it was the most important thing aboard.
I've read somewhere they are WWII style, hopefully someone knows when they changed to be end-hinge type.
Sounds like a job for Mr Google, AKA BubbaT.

Re: 50 Cal Ammo Cans
I had one or two of those side opening cans back around 1980 or so and finally had
to get rid of them in favor of the end opening type, I could never put much weight
of any sort, loaded ammo or bullets in one without warping the shape so much that
they wouldn't close properly much less keep water out, the end opening variety
seems to be much stronger and of lots thicker metal though on that last point,
I'd need to put a caliper on both types to see for sure but i do seem to recall
that they're significantly lighter in weight.

Don't have any ammo cans, but I do have an ammo crate. Think it's from between WWI and WWII,might not be. It was full of ammo when I bought it 6yrs ago at an antique store in Little Rock for $30.

Never seen an ammo can like that. All of mine are the standard .30 and .50 cans. That article has some interesting info in it. Thanks.

Sid, already shot it all, had about 10 duds out of the whole case.
