Suppressing for Hog Killin

Post by 14ReelFun on Sun Jan 22, 2012 7:10 pm

I'm on a mission to anialate some hogs and want something that is quiet enough to be able to shoot more than one at a time. The places I'm hunting them are small food plots with my fartherest shots around 100 yards but most have been 40 to 50. I have an M4 I was thinking about suppressing and don't know if that would be quiet enough. Anyone else have a hog killing setup?

If I were putting together a gun like that I would consider buying a 300 blackout AR-15 upper and a 30 caliber rifle can. Very quiet and effective subsonic factory ammo is available and effective within 100 yards. http://300aacblackout.com/

I was planning on buying a 300 blk upper for a registered M16 lower, but 220gr subsonics are a bit too pricey to mindlessly blast away with in full auto. For hunting applications, though, they should be quite affordable.

Consider a .458 Socom Upper...

SBR Ammo makes a Subsonic ONLY suppressor for the round too...

MUCH MORE energy from a 500 grain pill!!!!

Agreed and you may certainly have feeding problems in the M4 ....

+1 on the 300 blackout.

A friend told me a story of him and another guy hog hunting. He had a suppressed 300 blackout (ar platform) and the other guy had a 12ga. The hogs were running towards my buddy with the Blacout because the 12ga was so loud.

I've got the cmmg 16"upper. I'm waiting on ATF to send me my stamp so I can pick up my sdn-6 suppressor. The 16" barrel will be coming off soon and replaced with a short one.....might even just get the 16 cut down to 9".

Sorry to hijack

What lower works with the 300 upper?
A regular AR or AR10?

Going to build a blackout upper to put on my SBR lower. However, if I want to be as quiet as possible to try to get off more shots, I pick up my 308 bolt w/ the can on it. Closed bolt keeps the racket way down. I haven't shot a 300 suppressed yet, but with the action working and opening up, it's bound to make a little racket. I would rather Porky just hear his buddy get slapped with 180gr and wonder what it was and have no noise to tip him off where I was. thumbs up

Ok I've made up my mind, sorta. I'm gonna just buy another AR in the 300 blackout and buy another threaded barrel for my A4 so I can swap cans. My next question is where is the best place to buy a 300 blackout flattop with shortest legal barrel . Think I'm gonna go with DPR suppessor cause I like to do as much business locally as I can and from what I've read and seen they make a good product.

Cheapest place I've found for the 300 is dsarms.com can't say anything about their product but I am about to buy one. its 335 for a upper with SS barrel then you buy the bolt group and charging handle. looking at about 500 total shipped.

Ive had good luck just shooting full power 75gr thru my suppressed AR. They are gonna take off as soon as the first bullet impacts even if its subsonic, thats a loud sound.
Just practice transistioning between moving targets Smile
Ive killed 4 in one small run way, just swing and shoot.

I've got to agree with Nonnie, first time bullet hits hide...they're going to scatter like a covey of quail. Don't matter if it sub or not. The thing is that when suppressed sniping, the hogs don't know which way to run, some are going run right at you. That's where the extra kills usually come from.

I have, what I believe, one of quiestest close in guns available. A semi-auto 45 ACP carbine. It sounds like an underpowered nail gun. When that 230grn hollow point hits hide/bone, they're all in the wind. They're that smart.

My personal opinion, for 100 yards and in, get a 45 ACP upper and send it to SRT arms for integral upper treatment. Absolute quiet with all but +P ammo.

Here's my Camp45 from SRT Arms. Kinda wish I had gone the 45 upper route, for longevity's sake. If anything goes wrong with the trigger group, I'm in poop soup. [img][/img]

Good luck with it,
Breeze

Just get out there and start blasting. They dont run any slower or faster if you dont have a suppressor. But they do get smart fast.

My 308 remington with subsonics seems much quieter then my 300 blackout ar15. I think its due to the action cycling and maybe the spring being comprressed. I am finding that I prefer to shoot the 308 more for what its worth.

I wanna take this out hog killing. I think it would be great, all you hear is the bolt slap, sounds like someone slapping a truck door.

Its a heavily modified keltec sub 2k in 9mm that accepts Glock mags. I had to take it completely apart to send the barrel out for threading. I put it back together with a Red Lion precision rotating quad rail made specifically for the little carbine. Left off the stock sights and threw on some magpuls. It still folds up and is very fun to shoot.
