Ambi safety for 1911

Post by Brutus on Sun Jan 22, 2012 11:06 pm

Is installing an amibdextrous safety on a 1911 a suitable DIY job or should I let a gunsmith do it?

I've got a Kimber I'd like to have an ambi safety on.

Smile

In theory anyway, the trickiest part is the inletting or relieving you have to do on the weak
side of the grip to allow the little "ear" on the right hand portion to move smoothly up and
down but this assumes that the safety properly engages the remainder of the internals,
personally I had Billy Tierce in Utica do mine.

Just replaced my safety myself. Bob at Brazos gun works has a good description of how to do it. Go to his listing of magazine articles.

I've had some drop right in.... and others I have had to work on the engagement surfaces. If you do it yourself, just remember.... you can always take more metal off.... kinda hard to put it back ON though. lol Couple passes with a needle file and then test fit. Over and over

Thanks for the input, guys.

I think I'll turn this job over to a 'smith.

I plan to get the Wilson Combat Bulletproof Safety one of these days. It does not use the grip panel for retention.

This is the article Gale mentioned above: http://www.brazoscustom.com/magart/0601.htm

Phillip, thanks for posting that about the Wilson safety. I wasn't aware of it. King's makes a safety that also uses a special hammer pin to hold the "weak" or right side, but it is a slightly different design with a dovetail that fits over the outside lip of the safety rather than the backside, if that makes sense.

SV Infinity tried a design that used a small screw inside the part that goes through the frame, but it was too small and they didn't hold up. They discontinued it and are now making a billet traditional style ambi that I really like. I have them on a couple guns and they are really nice and holding up well: http://sviguns.com/1101.php?indx=19 I can't stand cast or MIM thumb safeties and have seen too many break. With the Wilson claiming to be billet and having that design, it seems like a really nice part.
