If the rifle is a single shot and breech loading. The regulation says 35 and larger.

Also has to be extractor-only, not auto ejector, and have an exposed hammer.

Thompson Center is not going to have any since the Fox Ridge Custom shop burned. You wouldn't want it from Thompson Center anyway. PM me for details. This dog won't hunt from TC.

Ended up getting mine through MGM (match grade machine).

I just wish we could ENCOURAGE Remington to make the 150 grain PSP available again as a component. Currently it is only available in factory ammo. This would be a great bullet for 35 Whelen as well.

My handi rifle is a 35remington and i bought it for that. Works good.

Didnt know about ejector tho. Some of the 45/70 handi rifles were ejector barrels

I've got 2 handis. 1 in .444 and 1 in 45-70. The 45-70 EJECTS the shell. No modification, came that way from the factory. You saying its not legal for primitave season?

Technically, yes.

I don't know how diligent the MDWF&P officers are about checking them, but once they see you've got a Handi-Rifle they probably won't even bother to check.

I'm guessing your .45-70 is relatively older? I think when the Handis first started getting popular (when MS first started allowing them for primitive season) they were still making the .45-70 w/ auto ejectors, but later on they went to extractor only. One of my hunting buddies has one that he didn't buy until about the second or third year they were legal and his is extractor only.

Smile

Edit to add:

Here's the relevant part of the MS hunting regs from MDWF&P's website

Primitive Weapons

"Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.35 caliber or larger) and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of those type rifles; and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading, shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges. Cartridges may be loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. Scopes of any magnification are allowed on primitive weapons.

They don't explicitly spell it out, but I think the relevant consideration is the part I put in bold and italics. I think when H&R originally came out with their single shot rifles in the 1800's they were extractor only and only in the modern guns before MS okayed them for primitive season were they auto-ejector, so they changed them back to get in line with the regulations. The MS regulation as originally written said that the single shot designs had to be from prior to 1900 or 1899 if I recall correctly, so the rifles had to be of the same design as the originals from "back in the day".
