Re: Who has the best Hangun selection in the Jackson are (Or say within 50 miles)
I met Larry of Discount years ago at a gunshow. He said he had been wholesaling for years and had decided to open up a retail store on Shady Lane and when it opened I frequented the place. It was friendly and they had a wide selection of components and open crates of SKS's for $69.99. When they moved to Flowood I made and installed the letters on the building and I quit going as much just because it's a heck of a long way from Jackson out Lakeland and I couldn't leave work and make it there before they closed.
Larry passed away and it just seemed to turn into a camo clothes shop, reloading supplies were slim. When the economy first turned down and ammo prices went up I was assured the reloading aisle would be heavily stocked. Thinking back to the glory days on Shady Lane I went back a couple times and didn't see much difference.
I've wasted several 50 mile round trips out there to find zilch so I may stop in passing but if I'm driving that far I may as well go to Van's.
DJ's Silvermine off the I-55 and Northside drive exit sometimes has some real gems.
For all you who aren't scared to exit off I-55 at Northside, get off and go West. Turn North at the Exxon and then hang the next right and you'll be looking at the back of the building. It's clearly seen exiting from the North, next to the Safelight glass place.

Took my son to Van's this afternoon to look at Glocks. He wants a 19. Took him there because they have the largest selection. I was shocked at the prices. They were the highest I've seen in Jackson.

With all the pro Vans posts on this thread I decided to go give Vans another look. Put a Kimber Custom II on layaway, will pick it up in 30 days.

If you want the best deal, get it off the internet and pay the FFL or buy used.

I've had two great experiences with vans and have always got good service. At the time they had the best prices on SA XD's (local not online) so I chose to drive from Philadelphia to Vans spent $30 in fuel but saved $100 over Philly Gun and Pawn prices...Your not to much going to beat online superwarehouse prices at any local shop.

Vans is ok, but very pricey. Great Southern, well seemed alot better at there old location. Top Dollar Pawn on West st. in Jackson gets some nice stuff in from time to time. Chuck is the Manager and cash talks, so he's easy to deal with,if you are a serious buyer.

Brandon Gun and Pawn. Grumpy gets some nice items in from time to time, he is also easy to deal with for serious buyers. I say serious buyers alot because, too many people at gun shows, gun shops, wherever hee haw around and never buy nothing. They will talk the item and the owner into the ground and still won't buy. Alot of people get tired of that.

Shout out for Big Daddys Pawn on Terry rd. in Jackson -- real nice to deal with. Smaller than Vans but worth a look when in the area.
Surplus City and Discount Hunting and Fishing will never see any of my money,i really dont know how they stay in business.

Vans will deal a little bit but even after that it is always cheaper somewhere else but it depends on how much he will take off of it. I was in there the other day and they were dealing with a guy looking at a kimber. I have also heard about a place called discount guns out on Lakeland but I don't know about their selection.

Discount hunting and fishing is a WASTE of time. I have bought 3 guns, a couple of scopes, a whole lot of cleaning and reloading items from them in the past. Last two times in there were not good. The LAST time I was there looking at pistols (with money in hand) the two guys behind counter had just got sandwiches for lunch and never asked if I wanted to look at anything. I had been staring at the glass for 8-10 minutes. I will never go back and I can promise you they wont be there much longer.
