1911 Question
Looked at a full size Colt Series 70 in 9mm today. I've never seen one of these before. I've checked several auction site to see what they sell for and can't find anything but Commander size guns for sale.
Anybody have any experience with the 9mm 1911's?
Found one post that said the full size Series 70's in 9mm's are scarce. Does anyone know if this is true?

Re: 1911 Question
I am pretty sure a Gov't Model Series 70 9mm is a rare bird. Never seen one other than in gun magazines and that was back in the early 1980's.
Wish I could find a Commander in 9mm at for a decent price, but I don't see that ever happening. Never had a true 1911 in 9mm had a couple of Stars that were similar, they were pretty good little guns. I'm seriously thinking about selling my Sig 9mm and getting a Rock Island 1911 in 9mm.

Re: 1911 Question
I owned one and it was fun to shoot. Many of the originals were converted to .38 Super and used in IPSC a long time ago. Today a 9mm will bring a premium over the same gun in .45. Depending on condition and what part of the country it could go from 650-to 1000.
Hope this helps

If you haven't seen one, it MUST be rare

I agree and have seen a couple sell in the 700-900 range recently. According to the information that I have, 9mm Series 70 Governments were made from '72 - '83, with a serial number range of 70L02601 to 70L34232. Assuming that is correct and all consecutive numbers were produced, that would be a total of 31,632 made if my math is correct.

Re: 1911 Question
They say the shorter 9mm & 40 S&W cartridges don't feed as well unless the bullets are seated long.
I read in on the internet so it must be true.
A friend once mentioned his brother has one, he never said it gave him any problem.

There is some truth in it, I think, but it's not an absolute and factory length will usually run fine with good magazines. In 9mm, the Wilson ETM's generally work very well. Metalform also makes a magazine designed by Springfield Armory with the help of Rob Leatham that works well, too. Tripp Cobra mags are supposed to be good also. I have both the Wilson and Metalform and have had no problems. Here's an article on the Metalform "Springfield" mags:

You might want to take a look at the thread, “9mm 1911’s” that began in Feb 20210 (I think) and that you can access in these forums at: http://www.msgunowners.com/t4188-9mm-1911-s
I have both an STI 9mm Guardian 1911 and a Taurus 9mm 1911.
If you think I might be able to help at all feel free to ask.

Some additional comments
And I do realize that I messed up the date in my posting above. Meant to write, “Feb 2010”.
Regarding less costly 9mm 1911’s, RIA does offer several models of the 1911 in 9mm in the $400 range. Take a look at http://centerfiresystems.com/armscor.aspx
Regarding alleged problems with the “shorter” cartridge length of the 9mm, I’ve had no feeding problems (did have an extraction problem after a while with the STI but that was easily remedied – you can read about it in that “9mm 1911’s” thread I mentioned earlier.). Neither 9mm 1911 seemed to care about the “shorter” cartridges.

Re: 1911 Question
I LOVE my STI Trojan in 9mm.
It runs perfectly on ANY ammo I feed it, including my new reloads. They are not loaded long. The only ammo that hiccups some is WWB. Not sure why yet.
9mm in a 1911 is awesome. Very flat and fast.
I run Dawson precision supreme tactical mags, and they are great. Never had an issue with one, and I am hard on them.

Re: 1911 Question
If you're interested, there's another STI 1911 page in these forums: http://www.msgunowners.com/t15202-sti-1911s
It dates back to May, 2011.
Provides some additional commentary.
