That would be nice to have at the range. I've got an old Naval signal cannon myself. My uncle originally had it and he passed away. It has been fired before....in the middle of Jackson on New years Eve

Re: Wouldn't you love to own this!!!
Kinda reminds me of my high school days. LOL!
We had a cannon that we used to shoot at the football games every time the team scored. As far as I know Brookhaven was the only high school around that had a cannon.
It was a loaner from a local guy who built it back in the 70s. It was made from an old tug boat drive shaft according to him. Externally it looked a lot like an old Civil War cannon, but it had a small bore (about 1 1/4") so it wasn't a powder hog. We never weighed the charges, but I'm guessing we used to charge it with about 300 grains of black powder. Pack it down good with wadding that we made from old jeans or sheets or whatever and it made a very good BOOM.
Used to scare the sh*t out of Brookhaven's opponents.

Got a 2 3/4 Coehorn Mortar (golf ball size). Not a toy, it'll put a golfball on any 5 par hole you can find. Going to buy an inline when I get my want's in order. I use Goex 3F powder. Anybody interested in buying some together, I'm in, especially with fuse. Going to get some rocket igniters but I have to write up a step process prior to firing.
Bought some From Bass Pro. Had all the reloading powder on the shelves but they kept the black powder in the back vault. Fella had to walk me out of the place before he's hand it over.
That's a really good looking cannon Vegas.

Re: Wouldn't you love to own this!!!
The North-South Skirmish Club I belonged to in Syracuse, NY had a 3" ordnance rifle. I believe it was also known as a Griffin Rifle, after it's designer. We used a tin can full of cement that was close to bore diameter and we cut slots in the base of the can corresponding to the grooves in the bore. It was quite accurate out to 300 yards. We also had a 6 pounder Napoleon cannon and a 6" original morter.
The cannon barrels were available at low prices ($1000) in 1958. We made our own carrigages and gunner's tools. The one that comes to mind is the gunner's quadrant. It is a long rod that is fastened to the gun (usually in the flash hole) and is used to repeat elevation increments. The quadrant had what looks like an upside down protractor that was held parallel with the bore by the rod sticking in the flash hole and there was a small plumb bob that allowed readings on the protractor. You have to fire the cannon and sight it in at 200-300-500 yards and install the gunner's quadrant in the flash hole and mark the tip of the plumb bob on the protractor for each range. Therefore being able to repeat elevation settings at will.
Along with the cannons, we also fired Original Rifled Muskets and Cavalry Carbines in live fire competitions at:
Lakehurst Naval Base, NJ
Fort William Henry, NY
NSSA National Match at Winchetser, VA
Saratoga, NY
Rochester, NY
It was not like reenacting, it was live fire. We also used original uniforms and leather goods from the Civil War that were made available by Barnnerman's Surplus Sales in NYC, NY.

We have had a Civil War cannon fired at the range at the past two yearly meetings, just powder though. Last year, it was in the pouring rain. I was surprised they got it to fire.Beladran wrote:Ugh is magnOlia rated for cannon fire? Lol

Hmm, this won´t fit into our rules because we don´t have a discipline like " Sporty field cannon" !

My neighbor thinks I am a gun freak now, I can only imagine what that would do. Would be good for firing around 6am in the morning

Just tell him it's the neighborhood wake up call. Then stick a speaker out the window and blow Taps at night. That'll really blow their mind.

As a teenager, I served as a southern soldier in the living history exhibit at the National Park in Vicksburg in the 1970s. We shot live rounds out of 12 pounder Napolean, placing the shots very accurately on piece of plywood 150 yds down the hill. Visitors would applaud every time it went BOOM, recoiled about 12 feet, and filled the general area with a cloud of gun smoke. Fun job for a 14 yr old.
