38 snubby pet load?

Post by Caleb C on Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:42 am

I’m getting back to my roots. The Glocks will not be retired but I’m going to start carrying a j frame a little. The 38 special is not a fast mover by any means. Nor is it capable of slinging big heavy bullets. So… how do you make up for this? What’s most capable man-stopping load in your cook book? I prefer to use Unique, Power Pistol, or 2400 but that’s not set in stone. What about +P? Do you think high pressure loads are safe in a S&W 642 airwieght?

They are +p safe. I dont reload, but im carrying some magtechs in mine that look like they have a shot glass in the center of the bullet. They hurt after a few rounds out of that light of a gun.

For a lot of years the FBI used 158gr LSWCHP. I like a LSWC myself. A lot of 38spl hollow points I've tested do not expand anyway, and the heavier bullet will get better penetration. Just my rambling thoughts at the moment. Shot placement trumphs all though.

Personally I think a long heavy flat nose would be best... Tumbling bullets are destructive!

I like the 158 lswc, you can load them light and heavy.

Gold dot 135 +p made for snubbies in a factory load.

158 swc loaded with power pistol if you are going to reload. While power pistol has good ballistics it is loud and produces lots of muzzle flash

I load (stuff) 2 (100 grain) double base wadcutters in a 38 case. Why not hit em with 2 bullets at one time....at snub nose ranges of 7 yards in you don't wanna get hit with this.

Check out Penn Bullets and you'll see what I'm talking about

Now that's a wad cutter. Talk about a soup can.

For years, I loaded 148 gr hollow base wadcutters backwards, with hollow base forward, over 4.0 grs of unique. Expanded to nearly 3/4 inch on impact, not much penetration but max energy on target.

I was looking through my Lyman book and stumbled across a load that uses a 170 gr cast bullet and Power Pistol. It was pushing 950 fps from a 4 inch barrel. That was the hardest hitting load I could find in my books but I'm not a big fan of cast bullets.

Yea. I'm weird. May be it's because that's the missing link in my reloading room. I'm not making my own bullets yet. There's really been no need to so far. The Glocks only get jacketed bullets and everything else that I shoot is too fast for lead.

May be I'll just buy a few cast bullets and try them out.

Never to fast for lead boolits.
I've dug my boolits out of a brem and almost reloaded them.

I picked up some bullets at Van’s yesterday. 158 and 125 grain Hornady XTP. I also decided to go with Power Pistol. It’s not the most pleasant thing to shoot but it was the only powder in my load book that would push the bullet as fast as I wanted. The +P loads are averaging 19K CUP according to the load data. That should have some considerable recoil from a revolver that only weighs 15 oz. Should be fun to shoot.

I also found some 170 Speer monolith bullets. May be I’ll try those later. There’s no way they’ll expand but the others are not likely to expand either. Might as well sling a big brick of a bullet.

I got 500 Speer 158 gr lswc's and loaded 50 over 4.3 gr Unique powder yesterday. Can't wait to try these out at the range!

Wow! The minimum load in my Speer manual for a 158 gr LSWC is 4.0 grains of Unique. I figured I'd be about in the middle with 4.3, b/c the max load shown is 4.7. I am still new at this and scared to go above or below the limits listed in the manual.

I imagine 3 grains is VERY comfortable to shoot! At what point do you risk lodging a bullet in your barrel?
