.17 HMR scope suggestions

Post by mackied on Thu Jan 26, 2012 10:43 am

Looking for a new scope for my .17 HMR and wanted to get your suggestions.

I'll be using for varmint hunting and target shooting mainly. I would like to have variable power up to at least 12 power. Adjustable objective would be nice as well. No preference on objective size. I'd like to keep the cost around $200 or less.

What would you suggest?

Thanks

for that price you can get a 4-12X40 nikon prostaff. great scope.

that said, i am not usually a BSA fan, but i have some on my rimfires. one of which is a sweet 17 i got from bass pro for like $60.

works good on my 17hmr

also, mueller optics are top notch. vortex are decent too...

+1 on the BSA Sweet 17 scopes. I've tried the front AO models and they work great. No experience with the side AO models. You can get the older model at NatchezSS. <$50

Im not a fan of bsa scopes except the rimfire sweet scopes. I have one and it is very accurate if set correctly. Saying that I just replaced my sweet 22 with a vortex. Swfa.com has them on sale for $99. Its a 24x.

I saw that vortex deal out on swfa.com a couple of days ago. Have you had a chance to shoot with it yet? I'd be interested to hear about it.

My vortex was a 6-24x50. Had it on a 17hmr marlin. Did good but got dark at 24x. And it was pretty heavy. But a dime at 50 yards looked like a bowling ball. Ha

I havent used it yet. I plan on shooting this week. I expect it to get dark when zoomed up to 24x as it is only $100. Its a big scope but it will act as my scope and spoting scope as well for f class shooting.

I will give some feedback later this week.

Let me say this as well. Bsa is a cheaper scope and I would never put one on a centerfire rifle but that thing is accurate even when adjusting for distance. I havent had a problem with mine. Wish nikon would copy the thing or someone and put some quality behind it.

Thanks guys. After much reading and research I decided on a Vortex Diamond 3-9x40. Once it's in and I've had a chance to use it I'll try to remember an post a thread about performance, etc.

Not yet but once I get their LRBC calculations done on their website I am seriously considering
it. The LRBC is their Long Range Ballistic Calculator on their website that lets you customize
an elevation turret to your load, I suspect that with 22lr I'll have to plug in a muzzle velocity
of an average for subsonic or target ammunition not high velocity.

Not a BSA fan at all...lots of 22 F class folks bought a bunch of em...got mine for $59 when Midway had em on sale....bout a $125 retail....I think I'm finding out why they went on sale

I'm hearing reports of several regular 22 F class shooters having had to get rid of em because they quit adjusting...

I've buy a decent quality centerfire scope....a Prostaff is kinda as low end as I'll go....I've had one a 444 Marlin Handi for several years and so far so good

I've heard many good things about Vortex....They were a sponsor at our first Ms State Championship in F class last year...

I'd be willing to take a chance on a Vortex...especially for a 17 HMR plinker

I was looking at the vortex site yesterday and I could put all of my ballistic info in on the 22 lr 40g ammo that I use. Maybe they just finished it up.
