My other baby, now that I've finished her

Post by Hrdnox on Thu Jan 26, 2012 3:50 pm

My Desert Tan Keltek PF9 with the aluminum trigger installed and the Twisted Industries .22 conversion kit that shoots like a champ. This was my Christmas present to myself. Couldn't have justified the $600 I have in it if it wasn't and, unfortuantely, I've still got more to spend on a spare mag or two when they finally get in stock. Silly, right? I know, my thoughts, too, but I'd do it again.confused

Nice, what's the finish? User or factory applied?

It's factory applied Cerecote. The .22 kit is a much better finish. Don't know if that's because the aluminum slide machines so much smoother than the steel 9mm slide, or what. Also, the factory gun and slide must have been shot at different times, because all three pieces have slight tone differences. Keltek isn't known for getting too balled up in the details, though. The Keltek portion is typical roughly machined and molded stuff, with little attention paid to the quality of the machining, whereas the Twisted Industries work is flawless, except for masking the sights instead of removing them for paint. Seemed like such a small corner to cut, when everything else was so nicely done. It should have been, for what they charge for the kit. Could have bought a whole .22 pistol for what the kit cost.

The .22 slide is a good shooter, though. A little difficult to find good accuracy with the long heavy trigger, but it cycles CCI mini mags like it likes them. So far, I"ve experienced no problems whatsoever out of the 9mm or .22 kit. Both have performed flawlessly and I really like the little kit. It's amazing how it transforms the little gun. 10 oz loaded and that's mighty light. The pocket holster feels heavier than the gun itself.

that's a good looking pistol. We talked about the kel-tek's finish wasn't as smooth as some of the others (which was why they were $100 more) but the sleeve and a new finish makes it look like it'd be great to fire w/o wearing a blister on your hand if you shot more than 50 rounds. I didn't know they made .22 conversions for those. That seems to be the more popular as ammo prices go up. You did good!

In 9mm, it's still a hand full, but this one doesn't seem to bruise my hand as badly as my last one did. I think I've learned a lot about how to grip these little hand cannons since then, though, and that may be why. Believe it or not, that aluminum trigger upgrade helped with the comfort of this gun an awful lot. With the .22 slide, recoil is negligible and it's actually fun to shoot. My only complaint is that the gun is so light and the trigger is long and heavy enough that it's difficult to be really accurate and that's something I usually look for in a .22. It'll plink pop cans OK, but shooting paper is pretty much a waste of time so far for me. I group better with my 9mms.
