One Bad Mauser

Post by Caleb C on Fri Jan 27, 2012 7:16 am

Here’s a project that we just finished up for a customer. It was the average 6.5 x 55 Mauser when we started. It had an after-market stock but that’s it. We fixed it up with this woodland camo scheme. This one has matte black, woodland tan, woodland brown, and OD green as the primary color. It also has a matte clear coat. The Blackhawk rings and picatinny rail were a nice touch. This rail was made for a K98 Mauser and required some serious “negotiation” to fit this rifle. We were pleased though. Hopefully the customer will be happy with it as well.

Nice looking rifle. I'll bet that scope did take some serious engineering. Looks like the bolt handle just barely clears as it is and there ain't a whole lot of metal left to take off, is there? Worth the effort, though, because it looks wicked sitting up there.Smile

I appreciate all the work you put in that one, but why was the bolt left bright when everything else is camo?

You know, Jonathan asked me the same thing about the bolt last night. I made a quick judgment call on that one. If it were mine that’s what I would have done. It’s such a purdy bolt. If our customer doesn’t like the shiny bolt I can always coat it for him right quick. It’s easier to put this stuff on than it is to take it off.

Getting the bolt to clear the scope wasn’t a problem. That K98 rail was a real headache though. We had to work on it a little to get the right clearance.

Nope. It's a Pentax. I was actually impressed with how clear it is.

Pleeze tell me that this Swede was already bubbaized before y'all did this. I'd hate to think this was done to an as-issued Svenska! Decent ones are getting scarce!

I think we determined that this was an Argentine rifle. In any case, it already had the aftermarket stock with a bad paint job. We just fixed it Smile

Ah, ok, I read "6.5" and looked at the cocking piece, assumed a Swede.

Good looking job you did, with that bolt shroud and that cocking piece it almost has to
be rechambered to 6.5 Swedish since I looked in the NRA mauser book by Ludwig Olson
and cannot find a single Argentine in that caliber or even one with that style cocking piece.
Is that aftermarket stock a Bell & Carlson by chance, it resembles a 6.5 I had done once
on a badly beat up mismatched Swede(serial numbers) that I had no interest in trying to
fix up in military form.

It is a Bell and Carlson stock. Did your rifle have a faded camo B&C stock by any chance? Did you happen to sell it at a gunshow along with some ammo and dies?

I see. I thought this might have been your rifle. The fella that we did the work for said he hasn't had it very long.

It´s a Swedish receiver

Post by Scharfschütze on Fri Feb 03, 2012 12:45 pm

It is a Swedish receiver; I looked closer and
(1) it has the "thumb cutout" on the left side for loading with stripper clips
(2) the receiver has the mfg as "CARL GUSTAFS STADS GEVÄRFAKTORI" visible on the right hand view
(3) as stated above by .45flattop the Swedes used 6.5x55mm, not the Argentines.
Here´s their original state:

Very interesting! Thanks for the info. Like I said though, it was already "bubbarized" when we got it.
