Threw a double with clays....

Post by Beladran on Fri Jan 27, 2012 10:39 am

So the other day I got a four pounder of clays to try in 38spl since it is easier to make power factor with it... I was loading 10% over max to give me 38spl +p which was 2.6 gr.. Well apparently when my dad called while I was loading I got out of sync an threw a double in one.. Went to the range was having fun... Pow pow pow pow KABOOM!!!! Sucker barked like a 357 maximum... Case was not even hard to extract but I did flatten the primer pretty good. Even though it was spooky I now have a little more faith in the powder knowing a double charge won't blow my hand off : )

Glad you weren't hurt. I keep a light on my dillon so I can tell if I double charge one. I use 3.8gr of Universal Clays so a double charge in a 40 is definetly noticeable.

I'm pretty sure if it was a double of bullseye or 231 I wouldn't be so happy

GOOD ADVISE!! I was loading some 38s the other night using a Lee Power dropper .... I usually drop around 30/40 into primed cases and put them in a loading block until I am ready to cap them off with a boolit. After about 30/40, I usually drop a charge and weight it just to make sure I am dropping a consistent charge. Well during one of my weighing cycles, I got a charge of .4 grains (using BE and dropping 3.0grains). Noticed that my powder cylinder had rotated around and was in the cutoff position. Of course I had not capped any of the 200+ powdered cases with boolits. Took my flashlight and discovered I had dropped virtually NO powder in about 20 or cases. Was able to correct very quickly. Would have hated to go to the range with them because they would have all been mixed together.

Always pays to check your powder charges ....

Glad it didn't cause any serious damage to you or the gun. What???

I've had an incident at a vintage match where I had a cartridge that I did not have any powder in. The primer went off and lodged the bullet in the barrel (fortunately not very far). I had gotten distracted by my wife then I was loading and missed it. Now I make absolutely sure that I double and triple check each round before seating the bullet.

Install an RCBS Lock-Out Die in the reloading press and forget about it... no more doubles, no more squibs.

So true. Bullseye will usually blow things apart i a second. here is a double charge of bullseye in a .45 Colt Schofield.
