Remington 700 SPS Tactical
I just bought a Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308 (Il get it tuesday)
Have a few Q's??
Barrel break in myth or should I do it?
If I need to what is the best way? Ive read 500 different ways to do it.
Barrel cleaning??
Proper technique?
how often?
what cleaners do I use?
IT will be used for plinking out to 800yds and whitetail out to 600yds
Il be useing Federal gold metal match 168gr for plinking And Hornady SST for hunting

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
Thats been my hunting rifle for the past 2 years, ive had great results with the 150 & 165 gr Nosler Accubonds both on accuracy and results on deer, never had a deer run farther than 15 yards, up to 250 yards which has been my farthest shot. I plan on working up some different loads this year cause I wasnt pleased with the two loads past 250 yards. I have 2 different stands that have shots past 300+ and I missed this year but could be my fault cause I dont practice that much past 200#.
What scope you putting on it?
I have the MGW 20moa base with burris tactical rings wirh a Bushnell elite 6500 2.5x16x50,,,30 mm tube and live it, crystal clear.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
Ive been using the AACSD model like that for a lil while. The 10twist does really good with the 175gr smk. All i did was start shooting it, no breakin or anything. Just sight it in and keep blasting.
Ive never shot factory ammo thru it, just relaods.
Ive done many 4 and 5" groups at 600yds with it pretty often. So its not a bad shooter at all. The stock sucks bad tho.
If you reload, try some 210gr SMK they work great at 600yds also.

I hated the rubber stock, if you have facial hair you will too. Good shooter, I just took some loaded ammo I had and started shooting no care about breaking it in. Just a bore snake through it every 2 or 3 rounds and you will be fine.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
I clean mine every now and again. Ive put 500rds thru mine in 2 weekends and it still shot good but i cleaned it before i went to shoot again just to clean most the grit and junk out of the action so i soaked the barrel in hoppes #9 amd when the patchs come out clean i ran hoppes copper cleaner thru it and finished it the next day.
Never really had much copper fouling that i could tell.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
I emailed remingtin and asked what they recommend.
I think il do it to be safe can't hurt anything
We do not have a recommended break in procedure for our guns, but there are several different variations of barrel break in procedures floating around. One that I have used several times in the past with good results is as follows:
Use a good quality cleaning rod, a good quality bronze brush and patch tip, flannel patches and quality bore solvent. (I recommend the use of Remington Brite Bore Cleaner & Rem Oil).
INSTRUCTIONS:
For the first 20 shots, you should do the following:
For the first 10 shots, run a patch saturated with Rem Oil through the bore after each of the first 10 shots, and follow up with a patch saturated with Remington Brite Bore, and finally a clean patch to remove all residue.
For each of the next 10 shots, run a patch saturated with Rem Oil through the bore after every two shots, and follow up with a patch saturated with Remington Brite Bore, and finally a clean patch to remove all residue. Now follow the cleaning guidelines below:
To ensure the highest possible barrel quality/life, you should repeat this cleaning procedure every 20-25 shots until the barrel has had at least 100 rounds through it. Failure to do so could result in excessive build up of fouling (copper/lead deposits) in the bore causing decreased accuracy and requiring more frequent cleaning between shots

Good lord, it's a rifle not an infant. Sight it in, shoot a handful of rounds until you're happy, and clean it. That's what I say.

If you look on Remington's web site it will tell you how to do it. I don't think it is a deal breaker if you don't but what can happen is when you do clean it your "cold bore"(the first couple of shots) can be a little different then the rest of your shots. If you break in the barrel properly it will not vary as much. The reason it happens is because small pieces of metal will pit the barrel and wear the barrel slightly when you first shoot it. Then anytime you clean it those small differences will effect the bullet(only slightly). After you shoot a few rounds those small pits matter less because they fill with powder. That is what I was told at Sniper school by a guy that knows a lot more than me. I have hunted with that same rifle. It is not fun to drag through the woods. I put an HS precision stock from another Rem 700.

Re: Remington 700 SPS Tactical
I did a lil break in with mine, shot it 3 times, cleaned and repeated for probably 20 shots. then I just shot till I ran out of rounds.
I have some 175 smk and some 168 smk I am gonna try out when I get a chance.
good luck with it.

It is a heavy huntin rifle but the main reason I bought it for my huntin rifle was for the 20" barrel. easy to move around in the stand and deadly accurate.
