Love $5 movie night......my thoughts on the new Underworld
Went to the movies tonight with the fiance, since Sundays are $5 movie day at the theater on Lakeland Dr.
Saw Underworld Awakening in 3D, turns out 3D actually stands for "$3 Dollars more"........
I'm a HUGE fan of the Underworld franchise, especially the 3(including this one) starring the love of my life since I was about 14, Kate Beckinsdale (insert heavenly sound here)
:

....anyway....this addition to the franchise takes place 12 years after the 2nd movie, Underworld Evolution, and continued to build on Kate Beckinsdale's character, Selene. During the 12 years between the Evolution and Awakening, humans have discovered the existence of Lycans(werewolves) and Vampires, and have begun to "purge" the planet of them. The movie basically picks up post-purging, when it is believed humans have successfully exterminated the undesirables. Lots of hints of Nazi Secret Police type behavior in rounding them up for the purges.
As expected, this one was also balls to the wall action, with lots of gun play, monsters, an ~8 shot Taurus Judge(
) and Kate Beckinsdale in her traditional tight leather outfit
Like about 99% of 3D movies, this one was made 3D as an afterthought, and not actually filmed in 3D. I'd say there were maybe 2 scenes, totaling about 10 minutes of the entire movie that were noticeably in 3D. Save yourself a few bucks and go see it in 2D.
One of the coolest things about this franchise to me is how they try to keep it as hard to pinpoint an actually time and place as possible. In this one, that is based 12 years later than the previous 2, there are folks driving ~90s model volvos and the like, along with more modern vehicles. The vehicle tags are in the traditional European simplistic fashion, yet everyone but Kate Beckinsdale appears to be American. Its just amusing to me at least, trying to figure it out.
If you're into the Underworld franchise this is a must see, if you are not then you won't like it, and if you've never even watched the first one, then I recommend at least giving it, or the 3rd movie(a prequel to the original) Underworld Rise of the Lycans, a chance. Because judging by the end of this one, it doesn't look like we have seen the last film in the Underworld franchise yet.
On an unrelated note, there were a couple trailers that stood out to me:
Resident Evil Retribution.....YESSSSSSS!!!!! Another franchise i'm a huge fan of! Looks just as good as the other 4! It also looks like Michelle Rodrigez might be back(I thought she died in the first, but maybe its just been too long since I've seen it)? If it wasn't her in the trailer then it was her twin. She dies in almost every movie shes in though so I doubt she'll make it to the end of this one. Anyway looks good, and if its anything like Afterlife, and is done in 3D then it will be one of the 1% of 3D movies that is actually worth the extra $$ for!
Wrath of the Titans looks like it has the potential to be great! I loved the original Clash of the Titans, and I also liked the remake, but it wasn't the same, and since this one will be less based on the original I'm hoping there will be less of an obligation for me to compare it to the old one.
Ghost Rider 2...............fans of the original, fellow bikers, and Harley enthusiasts in particular, go ahead and prepare yourself for what I'm about to tell you......................................

HE IS RIDING A YAMAHA!!!!!!!
This guy is NOT happy!
I keep trying to convince myself maybe its just a bike he steals, but every scene in the trailer showed him on a flaming Yamaha V-Max.
I will admit that if they had to use a Yamaha, at least they used a good one.....but I mean it just ain't right!!!! I can only guess 2 excuses for the reasoning behind this atrocity, aside from the money either Yamaha threw at them, or the money they saved by not having to build all those GR choppers all over again is
1) Buell is no longer in business, at least not the Buell owned by HD(Erik Buell now has formed his own company again), and Nick Cage rode Buells as his jump bikes in the first movie
2) Choppers are just not cool anymore.....they became too acceptable and therefore their own worst enemy, so the production team decided to go a different directions, and that direction was a "power cruiser".....I guess the HD V-Rod line was too obvious?
BUT as much as I'd love to protest by not going to see this movie because of the rice burner, I doubt I will because its got 4 essential ingredients to a good action movie: 1) Marvel Comics based, 2) lots of fire, 3) motorcycles, and 4) Nick Cage, so I might grumble through it, but I'll be there I'm sure.
Anyway, those are my thoughts for the evening. Go see Underworld Awakening

How did i know you would include something about the new resident evil? cant wait for that one. Michelle rodriguez did die supposedly, or maybe the injection she was given cured her after the fact. But she sure looked dead.... Just watched them all on blu ray last week.

I really like the Underworld movies, need to go see the new one.
Sorry, he didn't steal it, his bike in the film is a VMax, way more bad ass than a V-Rod

They should of used a British twin powered chopper in the first movie because that's what the Ghost Riders bike was styled after in the original comic books

I agree the V-max is a meaner bike than the V-Rod....but the Vmax just doesn't seem right for the part.....I dunno
I could've dealt with a Brit cafe racer inspired hell bike though

The first 2 are great. The 3rd one the prequel is tough to watch. I couldn't even see it on my tv. The whole thing was filmed without using any stage lighting except on Kate's face every now and then. I'm also a huge Kate fan too. I am also a Cage fan but I did see a terrible movie with him in it last weekend. It was called Drive Angry. I'll have to see if the wife will want to go to the movies and watch the new Underworld movie. Thanks for the review.

Haha exactly! Good looking and got that sexy British accent too.......
Can't forget her in Van Helsing too!

BigDaddyQ, unfortunately she was barely in Rise of the Lycans. That one is based around Viktor's daughter, Sonja. She's a good looking girl too, but she's no Kate. I like that one just because of the period it's based in. It wasn't nearly as good as the other ones, but as far as action and story goes it was still a cool movie. I bought it on blu-ray when it came out....there's a mistake ha, because like you said the lighting in the movie was awful, so it's exceptionally hard to see on blu-ray and a 55" LED tv. On the big screen it was still pretty good picture though, which is why I thought it'd be worth buying on Blu-Ray
I'd also heard Drive Angry was bad....I tried to watch one with him called the Bad Leutinent(spelling) Port of Call New Orleans......I finally cut it off after about 30 minutes.

Yeah he was a favorite for awhile, but he has done crap lately. I watched Raising Arizona on tv the other day though. Still great and I could sit all day and stare at Kate and Milla. Milla's the only reason to keep watching Resident Evil.

I do love me some Milla..........
And yeah BDQ, as big of a Nick Cage fan as I am sometimes his stuff is way too out there and sometimes it's just junk. But when it comes to his better movies, he can't be beat.

Really??? Hmmmmm different tastes I guess, I know I'm not too hard to please with a lot of movies. Sorry it disappointed you though! You really are the first person I've heard say they didn't like it though.

Too much just doesn't add up, People who speak perfect English with no accent in what's supposed to be eastern Europe doesn't make sense. Not sure what Kate beckinsales accent is supposed to be, I swear it's different in this movie. She is British btw.
I actually liked the last one, the prequel.... I'll still watch the movies but it's not high on my list anymore. This one just seemed cheap to me.

Kate Beckinsdale could be drunk, snottin, and droolin and I would consider it well worth the price of admission just to watch her wobble and throw up on cammera.... Not that I am infatuated or anything... just saying..... Ha!

Bahahaahaha
In the new one at the beginning she's naked on the floor but covered by mist and after the movie my fiancé claimed during that part she could hear me huffing and puffing out of frustration, and apparently I kept saying "d@mn! D@mn d@mn d@mn!" and looked like I was trying to look around the mist.......I have no recollection of this but it would not surprise me at all ha
