What makes more sense?

Post by Lt.Dan on Mon Jan 30, 2012 12:18 pm

To buy another complete Lee loadmaster set up for .45 ( I already have one set up for .40) or just buy 3 turrets so I can use my current one for 9mm, .40 and .45? I'm trying to decide, a whole complete setup is on sale right now at midway for $220 or so that's with dies and powder drop. But my other route is to get two more turrets, a new set of carbide .45 dies with FCD and since I just got a set of 9mm dies I just need a 9mm FCD. The latter is the cheaper but I am about time and efficiency over cost. I also looked at the blue kool-aid but I would be starting from scratch if I did that so that's a little too expensive for me. Oh and I would need a larger primer feeder to use my current setup. I already have my casting equipment picked out and I am about to hit the order button so that is taken care of I am just thinking about the press situation. Thanks.

If you got space and cash, get the whole set up. Check out the Dillon Square Deal. If I did a lot of loading for a single handgun caliber, that's the way I would go.

I have the space and the cash I just don't know what I want yet haha. I'll check out the Dillon, but I really want a progressive because time is money and if I can save some time reloading I can spend more time shooting. I don't reload for precision just basic target pistol, my precision rifle is done on a totally different machine. Thanks for the input for sure.

I hesitate to reply because I can't help with the Lee stuff. I am a blue koolaid drinker so to speak, but since it came up...

The Square Deal is a great progressive press, but since you are talking 3 different handgun calibers I'd recommend the Dillon 550 if you are considering blue on a budget. You could keep the dies you already have (Square Deal uses small base proprietary dies) and the 550 is the easiest blue press on which to swap calibers. If are aren't swapping primer sizes, its 5 minutes, tops. Even swapping from large to small primers or vice versa, you can swap calibers in 10 minutes. You could sell your current press to recoup some of the cost. The 550 is simple and straightforward, is backed by the Dillon lifetime no B.S. warranty, and will pretty easily load 350 - 450 rounds an hour. Some rifle shooters have been very succesful loading long range precision rifle ammo on the 550 as well, although you have to slow the production rate down a bit and I think the best results were using a different powder throw means entirely.

You make a good point DB but Just getting into the Dillon world is a hefty chunk of change. I may see how much I can get for my Lee and factor that in. There are a lot of options out there I just need to make that best decision I can. Thanks everyone.
