Scope rant

Post by Joe S. on Mon 30 Jan 2012 - 14:02

I am probably the only one but this is a gripe for me…

I wish there were more manufacturers making quality scopes in higher powers with small objective lenses…

For instance, I want a 2.5-10, 4-12, 4-14, or similar in about a 32mm objective. The rifle I want to put it on is my Ruger Scout rifle and it has the rail out front. I want to keep the rings as low as possible and am currently running a 2-7x32 scope and it works, but id like to have a littler higher magnification than 7 or 9 but still want to keep the rings as low as possible. Nightforce makes one. But I cant afford $1300 right now, so I am looking at the Burris Timberline in 4-14x32, BUT I am not a fan of adjustable objective scopes and im just not real sure about the quality of the low end Burris's like I am sure this one is giving it is only around $200. I have felt really fortunate to have some good scopes in my Nikon Prostaffs but am just leary of most scopes on the "low end" of manufacturers line ups… im sure it would be fine and it is probably what I will go with.

Anyone else feel like I do, or are yall all liking the 50mm objectives being offered now? Maybe I should just man up and slap some taller rings on the rifle. I just like it being "low profile"...

I did see one of those. Pretty clear and bright? My 2-7x32 prostaff is plenty bright until after legal shooting hours

I gave you boys an $800 solution....not a $1300 one.....

Well I'm no scope expert, but I would imagine that to have a really clear and bright scope with a smaller objective that you say you want....demands more precision and more expense...

One of these days you fella's will quit being cheap.....you only live once

Carry on you tight wads

I wouldnt buy an $800 scope either. Im not in f class nor shooting at 1500 meters at insurgents... No need for it in any way shape or form for what i do. Im too practical to spend that on something i would use a few times a year.

so if I shoot a deer 31 mins after sunset I am illegal?????????? evil grin I have never done it but I did buy a 50mm obj with 30mm tubes to try it out evil grin

I bought a bushnell elite 6500 scope two years ago and it is bright at the hours you are reffering to. and I love the scope but it is not what you are looking for.

I cant help you, just missing deer season already.

You can get the Leupold VX-1 4-12x40 for around $250. The 40 will only sit about 3/16" higher that a 32.

yeah you are alone. I am looking to go up to a 56mm objective. Johnny law don't care about deer hunting no more anyway. I like to be able to see with a full moon. another problem the higher the mag the less light transmission so thats part of why smaller objectives don't go as high.

Marty, a 40mm wont fit without going to a higher ring. The 32 BARELY clears the rail up front.

Im commited to buying something now. Just put the prostaff on my daughters 30-30
