Think it might be time for another 1911

Post by Vermilion on Tue 31 Jan 2012 - 9:47

Last one I had was a Colt Delta Elite which was fun but seeing as I don't reload yet, VERY expensive to shoot. I sold it because it really was too pretty to carry and too expensive to make sure it fed reliably. I've owned a pretty good bunch of 1911's over the years from an Ed Brown Kobra Carry to Wilson TE and CQB to 1st gen Kimber CDP's and a bunch others. I've since sold all of those years ago but, I feel the itch coming back. Mostly looking for a bobtailed commander sized 1911 which there aren't many of. I did happen upon this one though on Sig Sauer's website. http://sigsauer.com/CatalogProductDetails/1911-carry-nightmare.aspx

Looks like that fits the bill pretty well. Just have to wait til they start hitting dealers and such. Maybe it will take awhile and the itch will go away.... doubtful lol

There are actually a good many available now so you have some choices if you want them. Of course Ed Brown still makes them but they are pricey, and you can buy the jig and mainspring housing and have a standard 1911 converted to a bobtail. There are probably others, but here are the ones that came to mind in addition to the Sig:

Smith and Wesson makes a couple:

Dan Wesson was one of the first after Ed Brown I think to make them. The last one pictured was discontinued in 2010 but might be available on the used market:

Kimber makes 5 or 6 different bobtails in different configurations (look at their "Super Carry" line I think), but here are two:

Fusion firearms makes bobtails, too, and offers some semi-custom options at a reasonable price:

Yea I've seen the S&W, DW, and Kimber pistols. The DW seem to be running quite high from what I can tell and the Kimber Super Carry is high as well. Maybe I'll try and compare the Sig and the S&W to each other. I know the S&W has an alloy frame while the Sig has a steel frame.

Word to the wise, the SIGS you will have a hard time finding holsters for. The frame and slide are wider than most 1911s.

Yea I've read about that but seeing how long they've been out now I don't think it'll be a problem. Good bit of holster manufacturers have specific options for the Sig 1911's.

Hmm...

S&W Alloy Framed Bobtail runs around $1100
Kimber Super Carry Bobtail runs around $1275
Dan Wesson VBOB runs around $1500

Never thought I'd see a Dan Wesson 1911 get that high. I hear the Black version carries a $18-1900 price tag compared to the SS at $1500. Guess I'll wait and see how much the Sig is when it starts hitting stores. I'm thinking it'll probably be around $950-$1050.

Damn I'm wanting another 1911. Put in an order for the Sig Nightmare Carry a couple days ago but I doubt it'll be in for a couple months. Might have to buy me a regular 5" to satiate myself for now.

I looked at a Sig Nitron this morning. I'm thinking it may be my next 1911. I can't find a Ruger SR1911 to even look at much less buy and the S&W E Series is just as scarce.

I do like the looks of the Nigthmare though. I might be interested in swapping out those extended mags though. That extra bit hanging down plus the bumper seems like it would be a little harder to conceal and cover.

If I could find a Nitron Carry anywhere around here I'd probably buy it and bobtail it myself but, haven't seen one at all.

There was a Ruger 1911 at the Hattiesburg show last weekend but the dealer had a premium price on it and it was still there when I left. They are scarce for the moment, but soon the supply will catch up with demand. There are so many good ones out there now, it is tough to decide which one is best...

Think I've found my next one. Sig Tactical Operations. Sounds too tacticool but, its a helluva 1911 for under $1000. Night sights, magwell, ambi safety, checkered front strap, and a light rail. Will probably just be a range/nightstand pistol. Plus Sig ships them with 4 mags which is pretty nice.

LGS got a Kimber Super Carry Pro HD in stock and it sure is pretty. But it sure is expensive at $1,469!!

The Sig I'm really wanting is $400 cheaper just have to wait for them to come in.

Guess its an easy choice as I don't currently have anywhere near $1469. Don't think the two Glocks and cash I have will get anywhere close lol

Starting to get that 'want a new gun badly' feeling haha.

Once that 1911 bug bites, it will always itch! I've got a 70 series Gov mdl (Colt of course). I bought it new and it will never leave. These polymers are great gun, but I can't keep my hands off the 1911!

If you're going to pay $1500 get the DW VBob, or one like the CCO or Guardian that already has their black finish. I love kimbers, but outside of the more base-ish models, and the TLE line, you really aren't getting what you pay for.

The SC HD line is nice....but it's coated in Kimpro II, so go ahead and factor in the cost of a refinish because Kimpro doesn't just wear like a normal finish, it flakes off in chunks
