So you found an article to help you justify being thrifty eh...
Funny how He talked about premium scopes but did not mention a single one I'd consider to be a premium product.....
Believe me, in certain circumstances....they make a huge difference...but only you can determine that value.....
I've never regretted "expensive" glass....I regretted the other several times...all depends of what you use it for and how hard you are on your gear

I agree with him. I like low power compact scopes on my hunting rifles but where I hunt there will be no shots over a hundred yards. Every deer I've ever shot was with the scope on the lowest setting. If I hunted big open spaces I might think differently.

Same here. Over the last ten years I have taken quite a few deer and the average is 75 yards. I hunt hardwoods and no fields. A 3-9x40 is way too much scope for me

I stay away from glass all together. Maybe in 20 years when I'm twice as blind as I am now. If I can't take a shot because it's too dark for me to pick up the irons I don't want to be tracking a blood trail in that light either. To each his own

Exactly what I was gonna say. If 100 yards is the farthest shot I'm shooting I wouldn't buy any glass either. Irons would get the job done, but since my shots range out to 600 yards i buy decent scopes. I'm sure Neck wouldn't mount a single scope I own on even an ex-brother-in-laws illegitimate kids red rider, but I'm happy with my Burris 312XTR, my monarchs and my luepold. Much more so than the POS Ziess conquest I stupidly bought based on manufacturers name.
BTW I usually think Chuck Hawkes is a pretty reasonable writer. Decent article except the second to last paragraph. You can tell a night and day difference between a 40mm Ziess and a 50mm prostaff. At dusk the prostaff wins hands down. I have both I already proved it to myself.
