Wife's Blessing

Post by milron on Tue Jan 31, 2012 3:35 pm

I got lucky at Christmas and got the blessing to get my first AR. Guess I caught her at a weak moment!
I've been reading the articles and trying to do my study work before just running out and buying because, "so and so has one like this." I've read the post of buying an AR and probably came out almost as confused as I went in, not really, it was a great informative post.

So here's my wish: .458 SOCOM
My requirement: LEFT-HANDED
Would like some input from you well versed AR owners/users in helping me put a good all around gun together.
Budget:$2-3K

I'm not sure if Stag is the only lefty ar manufacturer but they're probably the best. I would start there. Your worst case scenario would be building your ar around Stag's lefty upper.

Honestly.......as a lefty, there is absolutely ZERO need for a left handed AR. I've been shooting ARs for a few years now and I've never had a single issued shooting a right handed gun lefty.

But if you insist, for a left handed upper Stag will be just about your only option that I'm aware of.

I like your style though, go big or go home!

What he said.

My wife and I are both left handed and have zero problem shooting right handed ARs.

Out of curiosity? Why the .458? I have no experience with that caliber, but as I understand it ammo is hard to come by unless you reload. If its hunting then I can understand, but just a kicks and giggles gun i'd start out with a 5.56.

Plus I'd think it might require different mags that won't be as plentiful as standard GI and pmags are, which again is fine if you are ok with that.

As far as I know, again I know zip about the .458, i would think it fits in a standard AR lower, if so I would look at a Palmetto State Armory lower. $80 right now, but if you wait until just about any nationally recognized holiday they should go back on sale for $50, so add in $7 shipping and $25-35 transfer fee and you have a $82-92 lower, which is about as good as it gets these days! I got 4 back on black Friday and total cost wound up being
about $70 per lower because I was given a great rate since I was transferring so many.

Just make sure you buy quality parts. With your budget that shouldn't be a problem, but I don't know what parts would have to be specific to the .458 so you could potentially get into some money quick. I would assume just the barrel, bolt and bolt carrier group, and possibly mags.

And then whatever you have left use to buy a good optic.

Rock River arms makes some awesome rifles in .458 SOCOM. If you'd like to go to their site and check them out, we can definitely put something nice together for you for a great price.

Give me a PM or a call if you're interested.
