I might be wrong.......but hasn't this always been illegal? Maybe not on the state level?

Kinda shocked to see this is possibly not already a state law. Be really shocked if it's not a federal law.

BATF regulation based upon the Federal Gun Control Act of 1968, Pub.L. 90-618, 82 Stat. 1213, enacted October 22, 1968 by president Lyndon Johnson,:

27 CFR 478.34 Removed, obliterated, or altered
serial number.

No person shall knowingly transport,
ship, or receive in interstate or foreign
commerce any firearm which has had the
importer's or manufacturer's serial number
removed, obliterated, or altered, or possess
or receive any firearm which has had
the importer's or manufacturer's serial
number removed, obliterated, or altered
and has, at any time, been shipped or
transported in interstate or foreign commerce.

I talked to an officer yesterday who told me that unless there are several guns involved, the BATF doesn't usually bother with it. So, this law will let the state deal with it.
